Historic Resort, La Casa del Zorro, to Re-open this Summer
in Borrego Springs, California

The Shuttered Property is being Revived and Managed by HMG Hotels

May 20, 2013
- A historic jewel of Borrego Springs, La Casa del Zorro is one of Southern California's most famous destination resorts. This special property in the Anza Borrego desert boasts not only a legendary founding, but is home to many Hollywood weddings, events, and celebrity weekends. Our community is thrilled to see the property being revived by the Hotel Managers Group, a San Diego based hotel management company founded by distinguished Rancho Santa Fe hotelier Jack Giacomini. HMG Hotels is nearly thirty years old and is currently brimming at the edges with growth and expansion. Visitors to their Facebook page tell stories of eagerly wanting to return to La Casa del Zorro for anniversaries and family celebrations. Originally owned by the Copley family for more than four decades, La Casa Del Zorro eventually changed hands and has not been open to the public for the past three years. For a few years, it was called the Borrego Springs Resort, and we are all eager for the long-anticipated reopening of La Casa del Zorro, slated for a soft opening in June, 2013 (rooms only, limited food and beverage service for guests, Fox Den bar open to the public) and a Grand Opening in September 2013.

When one thinks of the legend of Zorro, nothing but Latin romance, chivalry, and bravery come to mind. The original owners Helen and James Copley, struck up a romance at the property and later married for life. La Casa del Zorro offers an opportunity to any desert lover, especially those in Southern California, to enjoy a pampered setting, and provides a perfect corporate retreat option for those seeking seclusion and privacy. Since the resort is located on 42 acres in proximity to a golf course and magnificent hiking, visitors can look up to a pristine night sky unencumbered by city lights. Borrego Springs is one of only three Dark Sky communities in the United States. The resort offers 63 carefully appointed luxury guest suites to choose from, including 19 individual casitas that have a private pool or spa. Their restaurant is called “The Butterfield Room,” named after the historic route of the Butterfield stagecoach in the 1880s. The bar is named “The Fox Den” since Zorro means “fox” in Spanish. Contiguous to the resort is the former Copley residence “Happy Days” that can accommodate up to 150 people for receptions and has 3 main bedrooms, a sunken bar and game room, as well as a guesthouse with pool and spa.

HMG Hotels Chairman Jack Giacomini's business acumen is well-known, he has been a key member of the Hilton Hotel Corporation, Atlas Hotels, Town and Country Resort and past Board Member of the American Hotel and Lodging Association, San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau, California Travel and Tourism Commission, as well as the Lodging Industry Association. Giacomini is also Managing Director at the Crowne Plaza Hanalei Hotel in San Diego, a hotel lined with ferns and tropical foliage, awarded for its Green practices. In today's world, no business can be profitable in the long term without being built on a sustainable model where materials used come from renewable resources and where day to day operations, like cleaning and towel washing, are sensitive to the environment. In a delicate ecological area like Borrego Springs, the HMG Management team is leading by example and paying special attention to sustainable energy and responsible heating and cooling systems. Hydrodynamics expert Derek Downey is Project Manager at La Casa del Zorro (email: Derek.Downey “at” HMGHotels.com) with colleague General Manager Patrick Sampson, both bring years of management experience to the resort and are aiming for a 100% sustainable resort with regard to water and power.

Guests will be eager to spend time at La Casa del Zorro, not only because of its beauty and surroundings, but because of the captivating fictional character of justice-seeking Zorro himself, in his flowing black Spanish cape. In 1919, the writer Johnston McCulley created the character Zorro the “Fox” for his serialized novel “The Curse of Capistrano.” The first of 65 popular tales, the story portrays a romantic hero who fought injustice in the Pueblo de Los Angeles in Spanish California. In 1920, Hollywood produced a silent film called “The Mark of Zorro” and in 1940 the sound version followed, to be variously imitated in comic strips, novels, and films around the world, including by Disney, as well as in the 1990 film “The Mask of Zorro” which generated over $250 million in ticket sales.

We all look forward to visiting La Casa del Zorro again soon -- who knows, we may even run into Catherine Zeta Jones or Antonio Banderas in the famed Fox Den!  We will keep our eyes on HMGHotels.com for more details about the exciting Grand Opening this fall.
