Benderson Development to Include a 105-room Home2 Suites by Hilton
at New Cabela Crossings Project in Cheektowaga, New York

June 03, 2013--Say goodbye to Walden Village shopping center. Say hello to Cabela's Crossing, the soon-to-be-rebranded retail plaza featuring not only the nationally known outdoor retailer but also a new Hilton-flagged hotel aimed at the regional and Canadian shoppers who flock to the Galleria mall area.

Benderson Development Co. said Monday it is putting in a 105-room, all-suites hotel on the western tip of the Cheektowaga shopping plaza on Walden Avenue, where it also confirmed plans to replace a former Wegmans Food Markets store with the first Cabela's store in New York state.

When completed, the 88,000-square-foot, freestanding Cabela's store will employ up to 200 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees, mostly from Cheektowaga and surrounding areas. Construction is slated to start this fall, and it's expected to open in the fall of 2014.

"We are extremely pleased for the opportunity to bring the very first Cabela's to New York State and especially proud to bring it to our hometown," said Randy Benderson, president of the development company founded by his father.

Besides the thousands of outdoor products Cabela's carries, the store will include a gun library, bargain cave, boat shop, indoor archery range, a deli and fudge shop, and a large replica of a mountain.

The four-story Home2 hotel will be a "select-service" facility, located between the Burlington Coat Factory store and the Thruway, said Eric Recoon, vice president of Benderson. It has not yet come before the town for municipal approvals, but it is now listed on planning documents, and Recoon said it's also likely to open in 2014.

Cabela's, founded in 1961 and based in Sidney, Neb., operates 44 stores in the United States and Canada, and it has announced plans to open 14 new stores in the next two years. The retailer is also working with Benderson to open its first store in Massachusetts in another Benderson-owned retail center.
