April 16, 2013--Fort Bragg will see nearly $60 million in improvements to guest lodging over the next eight years as part of a plan to privatize the post's lodging. Fort Bragg will become the latest Army installation to turn over operations of its guest lodging to InterContinental Hotel Group. The company, one of the largest hotel groups in the world, already operates Army lodging at a number of other installations, including Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Leavenworth, Kan. A spokesman for IHG did not return phone calls for comment. Dave Foster, an Army spokesman, said Fort Bragg and 17 other installations will make the switch May 1. The Army began privatizing its lodging in 2009, with 10 installations, he said. Another 11 installations were privatized in 2011. On Fort Bragg, Moon and Hardy halls will be renovated to Holiday Inn Express hotels, Foster said. Plans also call for an 85-room Candlewood Suites to be built at the corner of Bastonge Street and Reilly Road. Foster said early improvements will include a replacement of bedding and furniture. The "heavy renovations," which include the conversions of Hardy and Moon Halls and the construction of the hotel, won't begin until 2017. Completion of those projects is scheduled for late 2018. Renovations and improvements to other lodging will continue after that. Once all of the upgrades are made, Fort Bragg will have 620 rooms for guests.
