How Relevant are Nightclub Concepts?

Nightclub & Bar Reports 2012 Revenue from the Top 100 U.S. Venues at $1.5 billion, Up 7% Over 2011
with Seven of the Ten Top Grossing U.S. Nightclubs in Las Vegas

By Andrea Domanick, Las Vegas SunMcClatchy-Tribune Regional News

Feb. 21, 2013--Trade publication Nightclub & Bar revealed its 2013 Top 100 list of the nation's top earning nightlife venues, with the clubs and bars of the Las Vegas Strip dominating the rankings.

Las Vegas is home to seven of the Top 10 establishments, and while that's down from eight in 2012, the city continues to raise the list's revenue ceiling: Top earners XS at Steve Wynn's Encore and Marquee at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas tied for first place and broke records with annual earnings topping $80 million.

Twenty-one Las Vegas bars, clubs and lounges made the list, down one from last year, though its venues ranked higher overall with 16 placing in the Top 30. Rankings are based on estimates of each venue's total revenue in 2012.

Nightclub & Bar, which hosts its annual convention and trade show in Las Vegas next month, reported a total revenue from the Top 100 venues of $1.5 billion, up about 7 percent from a year ago. The bar and nightclub industry continued to enjoy overall growth with a 3.9 percent jump in revenue.

"This demonstrates not only the relevance of the concepts but also the strength of their operations and promotional programs," said David Henkes, vice president and on-premise practice leader at Technomic, the Chicago-based market research firm that helped develop the rankings. "They're connecting with consumers and engaging them with entertainment and service elements that are driving success."

So just how did Las Vegas' world famous nightclubs stack up? Take a look at the Top 10 earners below:

--

XS at Encore

2012 total revenue: $80 million to $90 million

Last year's rank: XS climbed into a tie for the top spot, up from second place in 2012 with revenue of $60 million to $70 million. The venue helped usher in the era of the mega-club when it opened on New Year's Eve 2008 and continues to draw crowds with resident DJ royalty like Avicii, Calvin Harris and Tiesto.

--

Marquee at The Cosmopolitan

2012 total revenue: $80 million to $90 million

Last year's rank: Marquee maintained its No. 1 status on the list during its second full year in operation, while also breaking the annual revenue record it set with more than $70 million in 2011. The 60,000 square-foot venue has lived up to its name since opening on New Year's Eve 2010 as a premier clubbing destination. With three rooms of genre-spanning music and hip decor, Marquee makes a point of defining itself from its peers with costumed dancers, ahead-of-the-curve DJs and a playful, anything-goes party atmosphere.

--

Tao Nightclub at The Venetian

2012 total revenue: $60 million to $70 million

Last year's rank: Nightlife behemoth Tao draws steady crowds with its restaurant and lounge, but it's the brand's sleek, high-ceiling nightclub that makes Tao a globally recognized name. The club remained steady with its earnings in 2012, maintaining the No. 3 spot in the same annual revenue bracket.

--

LIV Miami Beach

2012 total revenue: $45 million to $60 million

Last year's rank: The chic Miami hotspot inside the famed Fontainebleau Resort jumped up a spot from last year, when its earnings of $35 million to $45 million put the nightclub in fifth place. LIV -- the Roman numerals for "54," referring to Fontainebleau's 1954 opening -- has established itself as a paradigm for the Miami club scene since opening in 2008, rivaling Las Vegas venues with a 52-table, 18,000-square-foot club space.

--

Surrender at Wynn

2012 total revenue: $45 million to $60 million

Last year's rank: Surrender has shared in the Wynn-property wealth of resident A-list DJs, and that's done the decadent outdoor venue a lot of good in the past year: Surrender jumped three spots from its 2012 No. 8 ranking and is up an earning bracket from $35 million to $45 million.

--

Pure at Caesars Palace

2012 total revenue: $35 million to $45 million

Last year's rank: Opened in 2005, the sprawling, Top 40-friendly club is still going strong among a list of newer, trendier competitors. However, Pure was the only Top 10 Las Vegas club to slip from last year, down two spots from fourth place and an earning bracket of $45 million to $60 million.

--

Lavo New York

2012 total revenue: $25 million to $35 million

Last year's rank: Sophomore Lavo New York, which launched in 2010, continued to outperform its Las Vegas counterpart in 2012, rising in the ranks three places from last year's debut at No. 10 with revenue of $25 million to $35 million.

--

Tryst at Wynn

2012 total revenue: $25 million to $35 million

Last year's rank: With its 90-foot waterfall and plush red decor, the 12,000-square-foot club draws crowds with an ambiance that strives to be as lavish as its hotel's namesake. The first of the Wynn club enterprise, Tryst remained within the same earning bracket as 2011 but climbed an impressive five places into the Top 10, up from No. 13 last year.

--

Lavo at Palazzo

2012 total revenue: $25 million to $35 million

Last year's rank: Dining hotspot and Tao counterpart Lavo also broke into the Top 10 this year, jumping from 12th place with comparable earnings of $25 million to $35 million.

--

Mango's Tropical Cafe in Miami Beach

2012 total revenue: $25 million to $35 million

Last year's rank: The colorful South Beach mainstay is getting ready to open a second location in Orlando, and with good reason: Mango's 2012 earnings helped it crack the Top 10, boosting the nightclub up four slots from last year's No. 14 with $25 million to $35 million.
