Sea Island Co. Plans New Hotel on St. Simons Island, Georgia

To Convert Former Headquarters into the 86-room Inn at Sea Island

By Gordon Jackson, The Brunswick News, Ga.McClatchy-Tribune Regional News

Nov. 08, 2012--A new hotel will open on St. Simons Island within the next year if everything goes as planned.

The Sea Island Co. headquarters on Sea Island Road, behind the Island Cinemas movie theater complex, is going to be converted into a 86-room hotel.

Most of the building has been unoccupied since the former owner of Sea Island Co. declared bankruptcy in 2010.

A public hearing notice says the name of the new business will be named the Inn at Sea Island.

Erin Coleman, a Sea Island spokeswoman, said she cannot provide any details about the plans to convert the building to a hotel.

It's uncertain where the existing tenants in the building will move once construction begins.

David Hainley, Glynn County Community Development director, said the project will be discussed at the Island Planning Commission meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Casino, Room 108, on St. Simons Island.

If everything goes as planned, Hainley said work will start at the beginning of next year and should be completed in nine to 12 months.

Hainley said there are no competing hotels in the immediate vicinity, and there are plenty of businesses at the Shops at Sea Island to accommodate the guests.

Hainley said the announcement is another positive sign the local economy is recovering.
