Cool Hotel Pools; Many are Opening for Non-Guests with Special Events

First in a Series - Los Angeles

By Tracy Brown, Los Angeles TimesMcClatchy-Tribune Regional News

Aug. 10, 2012--There is plenty of sizzling summer left for Southern Californians. Thankfully, many hotels are opening up pools with special events for non-guests. In the next few days, we'll look at some of the regional options open to the general public. Today: L.A.

Los Angeles pool party staple the Roosevelt is known for its weekly Night Swim party on Tuesday nights with DJs, pool toys and dancing, but it also hosts a more laid-back Summer Movie Nights series. Every Monday starting about 8 p.m. the Tropicana pool deck opens up to screen movie classics while offering specialty food and drink menus based on the night's film selection. Upcoming movies include "Flash Gordon," "Real Genius" and "Shampoo." 7000 Hollywood Blvd.; (323) 466-7000, www.thompsonhotels.com

Caulfield's is also hosting a weekly Summer Film Festival at the Thompson Beverly Hills. Every Tuesday through September its rooftop pool welcomes guests looking to cozy up to a film classic. For those seeking dinner to accompany the film, the full Caulfield's menu is available, as well as a special "Director's Cut" menu for two that features clever food and drink pairings. Upcoming films include "L.A. Confidential," "Speed" and "Reality Bites." $20 a person, which includes a small popcorn and soda. Doors open at 7 p.m. 9360 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills; (310) 943 1105; www.caulfieldsbeverlyhills.com, www.thompsonhotels.com

The Beverly Hills Hotel is celebrating its 100th anniversary by opening its pool to the public for the first time with a series of weekly pool parties. In collaboration with Remy Cointreau, the hotel will be hosting poolside soirees every Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. until Aug. 24. This old Hollywood-themed party will feature handcrafted signature drinks from a vintage bar cart, synchronized swimming by the Aqualillies and entertainment by Luca Ellis. If the chance to catch a glimpse of Cointreau global ambassador Dita Von Teese isn't enough, proceeds from the events will go to benefit Project Angel Food. No cover. 9641 Sunset Blvd; (310) 276-2251, www.beverlyhillshotel.com.

For the more "classic" pool party experience, Drai's at the W Hotel, Hollywood, (www.whollywoodhotel.com), hosts weekly Dayclub pool parties from noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays, and the Standard, in downtown L.A., has Swimming With Sharks (www.swimmingwsharks.com/la/) on select Saturdays from 1 p.m. to sundown. Access is not guaranteed for either of these events, so getting on a guest list or reserving poolside daybeds or cabanas improves your chances of getting in.
