HONOLULU (April 13, 2012) – The Modern Honolulu, an innovative 353-room marina-front property and the newest in Waikiki, has named Vittal Calamur general manager.  Calamur has been involved in the development of this unique lifestyle hotel from its initial development phase in 2007 and new brand transition in 2011, to general manger.  In addition to The Modern Honolulu, Vittal has been masterful at introducing and operating award-winning boutique properties across the country in various executive capacities including pre-opening design work, brand development and hotel operations management.

Calamur oversees all day-to-day activities at The Modern Honolulu and assures guests will experience the style, cuisine and excitement that’s made it the talk of the town, and a favorite with celebrity jet-setters.  Since arriving in Honolulu, Calamur has also been an active advocate of the local community, and integrated a vigorous approach in support of Hawaii’s travel and hospitality industry.  The Modern Honolulu now participates annually in the Duke Kahanamoku Challenge, the Visitor Industry Charity Walk, the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival and most recently, the month-long Mele Mei celebration of Hawaii music.

At The Modern Honolulu, Calamur’s experience opening and operating boutique, lifestyle hotels was instrumental to the property’s successful transition to The Modern brand.  His hospitality background includes participating in the growth of the W Hotel brand from two to 18 hotels; opening The Keating, first hotel ever by Pininfarina, designers of Ferrari and Maserati; TOWER23 Hotel, located on the Pacific Beach boardwalk in San Diego and a 2006 Condé Nast Hot List Hotels recipient; the JAMES Hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona; and the Montage Resort & Spa, a five-star hotel nestled on the bluffs of Laguna Beach, listed as the 2003 "Best of the Best Resorts" by Robb Report and the 2003 "Best New Hotel/Resort Discovery" by Gallivanter's Guide.

Calamur obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in The School of Hospitality Business from Michigan State University.  He began his career working in all areas of operations at the Westin Renaissance Center in Detroit and the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco.
