Select Registry Distinguished Inns of North America Honors Peter Sharp, Owner of
the Fairview Inn in Jackson, Mississippi, as Innkeeper of the Year for 2012

MARSHALL, Mich. (April 10, 2012) – Select Registry Distinguished Inns Of North America announced today it has named Peter Sharp, owner, Fairview Inn, Jackson, Miss., as its Innkeeper of the Year, a title he will hold throughout 2012.

Select Registry represents 350 premier inns, bed and breakfasts and small boutique hotels throughout North America. Its Innkeeper of the Year Award recognizes outstanding achievement; innovation; and contributions to the organization, industry and community. Select Registry innkeepers submit written nominations. An independent panel of hospitality professionals reviews the recommendations and determines the top candidate based on a point system.

“I am honored to share this award with my loving wife, Tamar, our incredible staff, and our many friends and colleagues who have supported us along our inn-keeping journey,” Sharp says. “We believe that giving back to our community and industry is just as important as the service we give our guests every day. We truly love what we do and believe that helping others is the cornerstone to success and fulfillment not only in business, but also in life.”

The Sharps purchased the historic Fairview Inn five years ago and immediately embarked on a multi-million renovation that included upgrading guestrooms and adding new technology as well as a restaurant, day spa and gazebo. Since then, occupancy has jumped more than 50 percent. Under the Sharps’ direction, Fairview Inn has earned many honors, including Best Bed and Breakfast, Mississippi Magazine, and Best Place To Get Married, Jackson Free Press. This small luxury hotel was featured in the best-selling novel “The Help,” set in the 1960s Deep South. Last year, the inn played host to the cast and crew, when they came to Jackson to film the Oscar-nominated movie of the same name.

A long-time hospitality leader, Sharp has served as president of the Bed & Breakfast Association of Mississippi for the past three years. During his tenure, the association launched the popular One Porch at a Time Campaign, visiting Rotary Clubs and civic organizations statewide to promote B&Bs and their impact on Mississippi tourism. He sits on the boards of directors of the Mississippi Tourism Association, Select Registry and the Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII). Earlier, Sharp served on the Mississippi Governor’s Tourism Committee as well as on the board of the Mississippi Hotel Association and Metro Jackson Attractions Association.

Among his leadership roles in the community, Sharp sits on the board of advisors of the Boy Scouts of America-Andrew Jackson Council and is a board trustee for the Beth Israel Congregation, Jackson. Last year, he chaired a yearlong celebration commemorating the temple’s 150th anniversary. The Sharps’ Chefs and the City celebration, held every November, benefits the Blair E. Batson Hospital Children’s Cancer Clinic and the Boy Scouts of America – Andrew Jackson Council. During the past three years, the event has raised more than $80,000 to benefit these organizations in honor of their son, Simon, an Eagle Scout who died from leukemia at age 15.

“Peter personifies hospitality,” says Will Carlson, executive director, Select Registry. “A passionate promoter of B&Bs, he has applied his tremendous talent and drive to the benefit of our members, our industry and the local community. I am thrilled to honor him with Select Registry’s Innkeeper of the Year Award.”

Housed in a 1908 Colonial Revival mansion, the Fairview Inn is located in Jackson’s historic Belhaven neighborhood, minutes from downtown arts, theater, museum’s and shopping. The inn has 18 elegant guest rooms and suites; Sophia’s Restaurant; nomiSpa; a game room; guest lounge; gardens; library with more than 2,000 books depicting life during and after the Civil War; and event facilities for weddings, corporate meetings and private parties.
