Victoria Paterson of Matfen Hall in Northumberland Named the Industry's Rising Star

February 2012 - The unsung heroes of the North East hotel industry were honoured for their work at the region’s top awards last night (Feb 23).

More than 300 guests gathered for The North East Hotels Association’s second annual Excellence Awards to celebrate the cream of the hospitality industry in the region.

Winners were picked by a panel of independent judges from a shortlist of nominees in 10 categories with Matfen Hall, in Northumberland, Seaham Hall in County Durham and the Thistle Hotel, Middlesbrough, each celebrating a double win.

At the event – held at the Newcastle Gateshead Hilton - Victoria Paterson at Matfen Hall was voted the industry’s Rising Star while the four-star venue also scooped the Green Award for implementing environmental initiatives.

Seaham Hall’s Chris Main was presented with the award for Service Excellence and the luxury hotel’s Graham Low won the Leisure Experience award for being the most promising staff member in hotel spa and fitness facilities.

Lesley Taylorson was rewarded for giving guests at the Thistle, Middlesbrough, the Best Arrivals Experience and Dot Wilkinson and Carol Mower from the hotel’s Housekeeping team were triumphant in the Cleanliness award category.

The Chef of the Year award was won by Ramside Hall’s Paul Beckworth while the Sales Champion award was presented to Nola Collinson at Close House, Wylam, Northumberland.

The Support Services honour went to Carole Douglas at The Holiday Inn Newcastle.

The North East Hotels Association was formed to give hotels within the North East, from Tees Valley to North Northumberland, a collective identity and to represent the opinions and views of its members at regional and national levels.

Joint Chairman, Damon Roberts, General Manager, Thistle Hotel Middlesbrough, said: “The support we received from the industry throughout the region was magnificent and the awards were very closely contested.

“The calibre of all the nominees was very high and a perfect demonstration of just why the North East’s hospitality industry is second to none.

“All the winners represent the very finest in their categories and our congratulations to them and all those who entered.”
