McLean, VA (Oct. 3, 2011) – Home2 Suites by Hilton celebrated the opening of the brand’s fourth U.S. hotel in San Antonio, Texas today. In the urban neighborhood of downtown San Antonio, this adaptive reuse project has breathed new life into a local historic landmark building to create the latest hip and humble hotel.
Home2 Suites San Antonio began construction in September 2010, and joins three other properties already open in Fayetteville, N.C., Layton, Utah, and Baltimore, Md. The first guest to check in today received a bottle of wine and a gift certificate to a local restaurant.
Built inside the South Texas Building, the 14-story, 128-suite hotel is located at 603 Navarro Street in San Antonio’s central business district. This Beaux Arts style commercial/office building was first opened in 1919 as the Central Trust Company Building and is significant because of its uncommon style and its association with Sanguinet and Staats – one of Texas’ most prestigious, early 20th century architectural firms. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
“It was a priority for us to maintain the integrity of this historic and beautiful structure throughout the construction process,” said Andy Rodriguez, Home2 Suites San Antonio General Manager. “We preserved the exterior and only made a few minor modifications to the interior while keeping to the prototype. The building is a pier and beam structure, which we incorporated into our design, and we were able to salvage all of the original windows and elevator doors.”
The property is owned and managed by Baywood Hotels, one of the fastest growing hotel management and development companies in the country. Baywood Hotels also owns and manages Home2 Suites Baltimore, which celebrated its official grand opening on September 8.

The San Antonio property features an indoor saline swimming pool and six different room layouts, with 96 king studio suites and 32 queen studio suites. The hotel also features easy access to technology and bright, inviting community spaces, as well as the trademark Home2 Suites amenities standard in all Home2 Suites hotels, such as the Oasis lobby area, the in-room working wall and the “Inspired Table” complimentary breakfast. The hotel’s proximity to the San Antonio River Walk provides convenient access for tourists and business travelers alike.
Home2 Suites by Hilton has three hotels open (Fayetteville, N.C., Layton, Utah and Baltimore, Md.) with nearly 60 properties in the development pipeline. Nine properties are currently under active construction in Lexington Park, Md., West Valley City, Utah, North Charleston, S.C., D’Iberville, Miss., Nashville, Tenn., Frisco, Texas, Charlotte, N.C., Jacksonville, N.C. and Jackson/Ridgeland, Miss. Future properties are slated for many of the nation’s major markets, including Houston, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and Denver and two additional Home2 Suites are set to break ground in San Antonio later this year.
