Ithaca, NY,
December 7, 2011 - The Cornell University School of Hotel
Administration
has named the Tisch family as recipients of the 2012 Cornell Icon of
the
Industry Award. This award will recognize the Tisch family for their
lifetime
achievements in business and for their extraordinary contributions to
educational, civic, and charitable communities. Andrew, James, and
Jonathan
Tisch will receive the award on behalf of the family at a gala dinner
at the
American Museum of Natural History in New York City on June 5, 2012. "The Tisch family is the ideal choice for the Cornell Icon of the Industry Award," said Michael D. Johnson, dean and E. M. Statler Professor of Hotel Administration. "Not only are they titans of the hospitality industry, but their business success also extends far beyond hotels. As philanthropists, the Tisch family has had a tremendous impact on so many organizations and so many people across the country." The family patriarchs, Laurence A. Tisch and Preston Robert Tisch, built Loews Corporation from a small hotel chain. Today the holding company is one of the largest diversified corporations in the United States. Its principal subsidiaries are CNA Financial Corporation; Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc.; HighMount Exploration & Production LLC; Boardwalk Pipeline Partners, LP; and Loews Hotels. Laurence and Preston Tisch also initiated their family's philosophy of giving back to organizations, particularly those in New York City. At New York University, the family helped create the Tisch School of the Arts and the Tisch Hospital at NYU Medical Center. They also named the Tisch Children's Zoo in Central Park and have made significant transforming donations to the Gay Men's Health Crisis, 92nd Street Y, UJA-Federation, and more. The second generation of the family has continued the tradition of magnanimous giving. Andrew Tisch is co-chairman of the board, chairman of the executive committee, and member of the office of the president for Loews Corporation. He is chairman of the City Parks Foundation and a longtime board member of the Wildlife Conservation Foundation and the NYC Police Foundation. With his wife, Ann, he founded the Young Women's Leadership Foundation, which develops and supports single-gender public schools and college-access programs across the country. He is a trustee of the Brookings Institute, chairman of the Economic Club of New York, founding chairman of the Jewish Leadership Forum, and founder of the Jewish Business Leadership Forum. He is a 1971 graduate of the Cornell School of Hotel Administration and is a member of the school's Dean's Advisory Board and the Cornell Board of Trustees and Executive Committee. He also serves on the Advisory Board of Harvard Business School. James Tisch is president, chief executive officer, and member of the office of the president for Loews Corporation. He chairs the board of WNET.org, where he is guiding the organization to incorporate the best of public television with innovating new technology and leading it through the difficult economy. He is a longtime member of the Board of Directors of the New York Public Library and a trustee of Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is also chairman of the board of the Jewish Agency for Israel, and past president of UJA Federation of New York. He also serves on the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He earned an economics degree from Cornell University in 1975. Jonathan Tisch is co-chairman of the board and member of the office of the president for Loews Corporation and chairman of the board and chief executive officer for Loews Hotels. He has spent many years serving and promoting the United States travel and tourism industry, and he is chairman of NYC and Company, the city's official tourism agency and local convention and visitors' bureau. Concurrent with efforts to help stimulate travel and tourism in the aftermath of September 11, he served as chairman of New York Rising, a task force set up to help rebuild the city by reviving tourism. He is also former chairman of the Welfare to Work Partnership and serves of the Board of Trustees for Tufts University, where he is the named benefactor of the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service. He serves on the boards of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the Tribeca Film Institute, and the Business Council for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
