R.D. Olson Construction Breaks Ground on First Kahului Airport
Hotel, the 138-room Courtyard by Marriott Maui in Hawaii


KAHULUI, Hawaii—July 15, 2011—R.D. Olson Construction has broken ground on the Courtyard by Marriott Maui hotel. This is the island’s first airport hotel.

The 80,000 square-foot hotel will remain under the ownership of its developer, R.D. Olson Development. It will be managed by Marriott International.

Courtyard by Marriott Maui is located at the intersection of Haleakala Highway and Keolani Place on 3.5 acres of prime real estate neighboring Kahului airport and Maui’s business, commercial and governmental hub.

The four-story 138-room Courtyard by Marriott Maui will house 49 studio king and 79 studio double queen guest rooms, six suites, and four extended stay suites. It will feature Courtyard by Marriott’s new Gen 4.5 design, highlighting a reinvented lobby, which fuses high-tech with high style and greater functionality.

Marriott’s new contemporary design focuses on drawing guests from their rooms to relax in the open and user-friendly 5,000-square-foot lobby with an adjoining cafe. The traditional front desk is being replaced with individual welcome podiums to allow for more personal and private interactions with guests during check in.

In expecting the hotel to attract a large number of interisland business people, it will offer a large conference room, which easily may be converted into two rooms via a moveable dividing door. Guests may also enjoy the hotel’s well-equipped exercise area.

The hotels’ exterior will exude Hawaiian flavor with its entrance decoratively clad in lava rock and pineapple medallions. Coconut palms, hibiscus and monkey pod trees will envelope the hotel with lush tropical landscaping.

Johnson Braund Design Group of Seattle, Wash., is providing the architectural and interior design services.

Construction project cost for the Courtyard by Marriott Maui will be $16.5 million. The expected completion date is set for spring 2012.

“The hotel has been warmly received by neighboring residents and nearby businesses,” said R.D. Olson Development CEO and President, Robert Olson. “While it will be a huge commodity to community groups and business travelers, the hotel’s location and amenities also will attract travelers transiting the airport and those wanting easy access to activities and sights on the island’s popular North Shore.”

R.D. Olson Construction is credited for other island hotel construction including its recent $40 million renovation of The Edition in Waikiki. In good measure, the company will employ local subcontractors, providing jobs for approximately 200 workers during its 12-months of construction.

R.D. Olson Construction, based in Irvine, Calif., was founded in 1979. It has grown into one of the top 50 general contracting firms in California, building such establishments as the 174-room Renaissance ClubSport in Aliso Viejo; AVIA Hotel Long Beach; Marriott Newport Coast Villas, Newport Beach; Ojai Valley Inn & Spa Resort, Ojai; and four Marriott Residence Inns in Long Beach, Burbank, Oceanside and Irvine. Renovations include the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Los Angeles; Ritz Carlton Spa, Marina del Rey; and Four Seasons Los Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. The company’s most recent completions include renovating the 19-story Hotel Palomar, Westwood; Hyatt Regency Orange County in Garden Grove: and Pavilion Hotel, Catalina Island. Additionally, the company has completed more than 300 major brand restaurants nationwide.
