American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation Awards Three Students
Scholarships Via its Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship Program, the
Foundation’s Most Prominent and Oldest Scholarship Award

Washington, August 22, 2011 — The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF), the not-for-profit affiliate of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, awarded three scholarships via its Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship Program, the Foundation’s most prominent and oldest scholarship award.

The program, which began in 1974 to honor third-generation hotelier Packard’s numerous accomplishments in the lodging industry, awards three students at AH&LEF-affiliated four-year educational institutions a total of $10,000.  Winning first-place and a $5,000 scholarship is Mathew Evans, a senior at Missouri State University.  Leslie Duran, a senior at Boston University, collected a $3,000 scholarship as second-place winner, and third-place winner Madison Sites, a junior at the University of Memphis, received a $2,000 scholarship.  In addition, the recipients receive commemorative plaques.

Each school nominates their top students to compete.  Recipients are selected based on a combination of hospitality work experience, academic performance, activities, and financial need.  In 2011, AH&LEF will award 265 scholarships to hospitality management students totaling almost $400,000.

“This year’s competition was a tough one as many qualified students were nominated,” said Joori Jeon, CPA, CAE, AH&LEF president/COO.  “In particular, first-place winner Matt Evans displayed exemplary work and academic experience, including several industry internships, two study-abroad programs – one in France and another in China, outstanding academic performance, and leadership positions in the student government and professional organizations.”
