Washington Dulles Airport Marriott Completes $9.3 Million Renovation

Design Concept Based On Eero Saarinen's Original Design Of Dulles Airport

DULLES, VA (May 19, 2011) — The Washington Dulles Airport Marriott has just completed a four-year, $9.3 million renovation, it was announced today by General Manager Christopher Coles.

The multi-phase renovation began in 2007 with a $4.8 million refurbishment of all the guest rooms, followed by a complete transformation of the front desk area and lobby to introduce a “great room” concept. The hotel also launched a new restaurant Aviate Bar and Grill and updated their ballroom and meeting spaces, including the addition of a new Dulles View event space featuring two complete walls of floor-to-ceiling windows.

According to Mr. Coles, “Since we are the closest hotel to Dulles International Airport, our design team thought it was fitting to use Eero Saarinen’s original architectural design of the airport’s main terminal as inspiration for the hotel’s new design plan.  Paying homage to Saarinen’s work that made him a true iconoclast of his time, the designers incorporated elements of the modernist style of the 50's and 60's, but updated it for the 21st century to create a welcoming spirit for our guests from around the world.”

Dulles Airport’s soaring wing-like roof and organic lines were re-interpreted in the lobby’s “great room” and bar area, where the cool modern style of Saarinen blends with a warm and relaxing color palette to create an ambiance that’s inviting, relaxing, and comfortable. Just as flight influenced Saarinen's work, it is also apparent but not overwhelming in the hotel’s great room, where aviation artifacts such as wing forms and propellers influence the shapes and designs of the furniture, fixtures, lighting and surfaces.

The lobby “great room” is a signature feature of the hotel. In the same way great rooms are the social gathering place in one’s home, the hotel’s great room is a versatile space where guests can meet friends and colleagues, grab a bite to eat, plug in their devices and work either in small groups or alone but still be close to the action – any time of the day or night.  It offers guests a way to connect both literally and figuratively.

In addition to the architecture of the late 50's and 60's, the hotel also takes a cue from the classic fashion designs of that era, which is evident from the retro chic style that influences everything from the artwork, fabrics and accessories used throughout the hotel.

Centrally located in the Dulles Technology Corridor, the Washington Dulles Airport Marriott hotel provides easy access to downtown Washington, DC, Dulles International Airport and the Air and Space Museum. With 368 well-appointed rooms and picturesque grounds, the newly renovated hotel is perfect for business, weekend getaways, family and leisure travel. Guests will enjoy the close proximity to the Dulles Expo Center and National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center. Other area attractions include Wolf Trap Center for Performing Arts, Virginia wineries, Civil War battlefields and Leesburg Corner Outlets. The 13,500 square feet of meeting and event space is perfect for weddings, receptions and meetings. For additional information call 1-703-471-9500, or click here.
