Plans for 300-room Hotel at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs Still in the Works

April 15, 2011--PLAINS TWP. -- Plans for an on-site hotel/resort complex at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs are still in the works but are progressing slowly.

Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs President Bobby Soper said the holdups are "things I can't disclose but it's related to financing."

A year ago, Soper said the long-discussed hotel and conference center would be financed and built by a developer, but the casino would operate the 300-room, nine-story facility. At the time, he said a memorandum of understanding had been signed between the casino and a hotel developer that could lead to ground being broken by the end of 2010 on the casino's Plains Township property.

On Thursday, Soper said "There is currently no legally binding agreement, but there continues to be efforts made to finalize a deal with our developer to move forward with the hotel consistent with the memorandum of understanding.

"While the structure of the relationship could be altered, it is contemplated that the developer will finance and build the hotel and we would operate and manage it."

He declined to name the developer.

Soper said the new groundbreaking date could be the end of this year. As one sign of progress, the casino has stopped booking use of its Seasons Ballroom past October.

"I wish I could say we're doing it because we know we're going to be building, but right now it's precautionary," Soper said.

He said that if ground is broken on the site, "it could impact that room." The ballroom seats up to 280 and is used for galas, fundraisers and other gatherings.
