Desires Hotels International Opens Coral Lodge by Cuna de Vida,
an Eco-Resort Featuring Over-the-Water Bungalows
in Escribano Bay, Panama

Escribano Bay, Panama – Just in time for summer, Panama’s stunning Coral Lodge eco-resort will offer families spacious over-the-water bungalows set in a pristine natural setting with amazing coral reefs, glistening golden beaches, pristine tropical rainforest, and the fascinating Kuna culture.

The newest member of the Desires Hotels International collection of independently created boutique hotels, Coral Lodge offers outstanding accommodations and service in one of the Central American Caribbean’s most remote, unspoiled destinations. The beachfront spa resort has a casual elegance and style that is both refined and rustic. It features a charming string of palapa casitas -- ideally situated over the water to maximize the soothing Caribbean breeze and ocean and beach views against a virgin rainforest – and will soon include bigger over-water bungalows that can accommodate up to six people.

The new thatch-roof bungalows will have 650 square feet of beautifully appointed living space featuring local art, a separate bedroom, two bathrooms with step-in showers, Jacuzzi hot tub, living room with sofa bed, sleeping loft, a glass-floor sitting room, air conditioning and 180-degree views from your private, double hammock furnished balcony.

The first of these larger over-water villas are scheduled to premier in July 2011, just in time for couples, friends and families to experience an unforgettable, unconventional summer getaway to an authentic eco-paradise. Summer is the ideal time to experience Coral Lodge, with low-season rates in effect April 27 through October 31 and excellent visibility for observing the abundant coral reefs and marine life.

The perfect setting for Romance, honeymoons and unique getaways… your over the water villa, under palm trees, on a deserted coral beach, a private island, with spectacular sunsets, under the stars…

Enjoy swimming and snorkeling right off the private sundeck of your bungalow, exploring the coral garden thriving below, or venture just two miles from the resort to the San Blas Archipelago, designated as one of the ten best preserved reef areas in the world. Discover an underwater wilderness of untouched corals, sponges and a diversity of marine life including several species of rays, moray eels, parrotfish, nurse sharks, mantas, barracuda, the occasional porpoise and countless vibrant-hued fish.

The San Blas Islands are also home to the self-governing Kunas, who take great pride in their lovingly protected environment and way of life that centers around “Gran Madre Tierra” (Mother Earth), who they believe guards, provides and keeps all in balance. Enjoy a day trip to this charming community and learn of its rich, ancient heritage with beautiful dance ceremonies, exquisite handmade garments and crafts, and traditional cuisine such as fresh “pipas” and coconut rice.

The area surrounding Coral Lodge is steeped in international history as well. The first European to explore the coasts of Central America was Spaniard Rodrigo de Bastidas, whose first landing was in 1501 at "El Escribano," the exact location of Coral Lodge resort. The pirates Morgan and Drake often used Escribano as a staging ground to ambush Spanish Galleons and to raid the nearby Spanish port of Portobello.

Coral Lodge by Cuna de Vida guests also enjoy numerous other activities and excursions, such as kayaking though adjacent mangrove and coral bays, flats, inlets and canals, on the beach or hiking into the tropical rainforest next to the resort, where you can see howler monkeys and other species in their natural habitat. Coral Lodge provides guests friendly and knowledgeable Concierge Service, catering to guests every need 24 hours a day.

Dock your kayak at the terrace of our over-the-water Kayuco restaurant and bar and delve into a variety of fresh seafood dishes and lunch menu options. Later in the evenings enjoy cocktails and “bocas and piqueos” while enthralled by the magical sunsets. The resort’s other restaurant, Casona Bohio (a Kuna village meeting house), includes the reception, handicraft store, a reading lounge and our main restaurant where you can enjoy romantic candle light with rattan and linen dining after sunset surrounded by tiki lanterns and Caribbean music. Compare notes and dive experiences with other guests while you enjoy a delicious diversity of local Kuna, Caribbean, Asian and Latin menu selections.

Aware of the precious nature of its lush, unspoiled paradise, Coral Lodge makes every effort to preserve and protect its host environment says André Niederhauser while working with local people to prove that luxury and conservation are not mutually exclusive. Considered a model for eco-development in the area, every aspect of the lodge has been designed to protect the surrounding eco-system. For example, the toilets discharge into a Bio Digester treating waste water anaerobic way and having the by product of organic fertilizer a Methanol to reduce the need of fossil fuels -- all of which are environmentally safe. Ozone is also used instead of detergents in the laundry, and instead of chlorine to purify the drinking water and the swimming pool. Gardens filled with native plant species and fruit trees that help sustain wildlife, along with the herbs and flowers that are grown for use in kitchen and hotel, are maintained without the use of toxic chemicals and fertilized with the resort’s composted kitchen waste.

The list of green initiatives at Coral Lodge, large and small, goes on … bath products in the bungalows feature biodegradable soap and shampoo, for example, do-not-disturb the marine life guidelines for diving, and catch-and-release fishing policies with the exception of more common species for the guest’s consumption that day. The 2011 earth Day is the day the First Bio Digester inauguration plant which will further reduce the resort’s carbon foot print by lowering energy consumption by 30%, using seaweed as its primary fuel. Other green initiatives at the resort include the use of solar energy in the new bungalows and the pool.
