2011 - The
City of Cedar Rapids has issued a Request for Qualifications for
Branding
and Management Services for Cedar Rapids Convention Center Hotel. The
Hotel is
being renovated as part of a the new Convention Center Complex in the
downtown
Cedar Rapids area.
The City hired Frew Nations Group, LLC (“FNG”)as project manager and construction manager. FNG in turn selected an architectural team consisting of OPN Architects, Ellerbe Becket and TVS Design. FNG added HVS Global Hospitality Services to the team who has conducted an appraisal, financial modeling and market study for the Hotel Project. The Convention Center Complex, construction of which will begin in the summer of 2011, involves four interrelated properties: (a) a new 129,500 square foot convention center (the “Convention Center”); (b) renovations to the City-owned U.S. Cellular Center (the “Arena”); (c) renovations to the City-owned convention center hotel (the “Hotel”); and (d) a new 500+/- space parking facility (the “Parking Facility”). When complete, the Convention Center Complex will provide the second largest exhibit and meeting space in the state of Iowa. The Hotel is aligned with the Convention Center Complex in order to attract a higher volume of conventions and tradeshows that require large quantities of hotel room bookings and stays. The existing hotel opened in 1979. The 15-story, 275 room Hotel was the only full service hotel operating in the downtown area and was the largest hotel in Cedar Rapids. The Hotel is located in the Central Business District, directly east of Interstate 380, southwest of the intersection formed by 4th Street and First Avenue.
