The Knowland Group Puts an End to the Dead End

This is the first in a five-part series:
The Knowland Employee Development Pipeline

McLean, VA 1/26/11The Knowland Group, a leading provider of business development solutions for the hospitality industry, has recently started a skill development program to help its employees reach their full potential called The Knowland Employee Development Pipeline.

Knowland does what many companies don’t. Others focus on hiring experience, skills and talent from the outside, but not Knowland. One of Knowland’s eight core values is “we believe in hiring great people who want to achieve great things.” Knowland knows it’s more important to hire a person who is motivated and willing to learn, rather than simply to hire a person solely based on their experience level or knowledge in a certain field.

“We want our employees to be that classic success story – someone who started at an entry level position and through hard work and self-motivation, became the head of a Knowland department,” Knowland CEO Michael K. McKean said. “That is why we give our employees the opportunity to grow themselves and become experts on Knowland products, services and on the hospitality industry as a whole.”

Knowledge is power at Knowland and the Employee Development Pipeline is about continuous learning. Once hired, all Knowland employees complete a week-long new hire boot camp at the Event Booking Center in Salisbury, MD. There, they learn the ins-and-outs of Knowland’s history, products, customers and the hospitality industry before starting their specific job.

Knowland employees never stop learning because everyone is encouraged to stay up-to-date on its products, services and the latest hospitality industry news. Nearly 50 different training classes are offered throughout the year – such as “Know Your Competition”, “Sales 101”, and “Giving Great Customer Service.” To top off the additional training sessions, employees have unlimited access to a library of industry publications at each Knowland office and online.

All Knowland employees know what steps are needed to move to the next level. Every department has a defined pathway to career advancement which makes it easy for employees to understand what goals they must accomplish along the way.

“We put these pipeline principals together after brainstorming about how we would want a company to help us succeed,” Chief Learning Officer Bill Cushard said. “At Knowland, we want to support people in achieving their goals and dreams and we can help make that happen by building a culture of continuous learning.”
