A Tribute to Bob Boyle
1948 2010

The Woodlands (Houston) Texas, September 20, 2010 Bob Boyle, who was regional vice president for Benchmark Hospitality International and general manager of Turtle Bay Resort, unexpectedly and peacefully passed away in his sleep on Friday, September 17, 2010.  His passing has left an unimaginable void in the lives of all who knew him, especially those who served under his leadership. For Bob, his work was never a "job," rather it was a life of genuine service to others. His loss will be profoundly felt by his wife and family who he adored.

Bob Boyle had always intended a life of service, and as a young man seriously considered entering the priesthood.  He spent years preparing for this, and although he ultimately changed career directions, the desire for service that initially directed him toward becoming a priest eventually led him to serving others through the hospitality industry.

Bob was a unique individual who truly led by example.  Instead of simply giving voice to this, Bob always felt his staff was an extension of himself and charged them with the mission of creating the best experiences and memories possible for guests, treating them as if they were guests in his home.

Bob was deeply appreciative of Hawaiian customs and sensibilities, and actively reached out to Oahus North Shore community, inviting them to experience Turtle Bay Resort as their own.  The kama'aina (Hawaiian residents) responded to Bob and his staffs warmth in record numbers.  It was not uncommon to see Bob in the lobby, at the pools, in the restaurants or on the golf courses welcoming everyone.  Its really no surprise that during challenging economic times, Turtle Bay Resort led the market in occupancy and average rate.  Thats the kind of property Bob led because of his superb leadership, the resort has become a place where guests from across Hawaii and around the world desire to visit and to which they want to return.

As he progressed in his career and within the Benchmark Hospitality organization, Bob never sought recognition for his successes, because his success was his teams success.  He has left a legacy of service that is extraordinary and will continue on as a testament to his truly remarkable and irrepressible spirit.  We in the Benchmark family miss him more than we can express, yet he remains with us in ways we will never forget.  That is the mark of a great man.

If Bob were with us today grieving the loss of a team member, he would remind us all to reflect on the special attributes of that person, and would quietly encourage us to truly remember their goodness by becoming great ourselves. That is who Bob Boyle was at the core a great man, a genuinely caring person who was devoted to the service of others, and an example for all of us as we carry his legacy forward.
