MUMBAI, India, January 19, 2010 One of Indias most renowned luxury hotel groups, The Leela Palaces, Hotels & Resorts has appointed Biswajit Chakraborty as General Manager of The Leela Kempinski Mumbai. For the past four years he has been the General Manager of The Leela Kempinski Kovalam Beach, Kerala. And just last month, he was awarded GM of the Year by Hotelier India. A 25-year veteran of the hospitality industry, Chakraborty has been with the leading luxury brands in India including Taj, Oberoi and now The Leela Palaces, Hotels & Resorts. Prior to joining The Leela, he was General Manager of The Yak & Yeti in Nepal overseeing a staff of 630. Chakraborty began his career in 1984 as Food & Beverage Controller with the Taj group. Subsequently, he worked with Oberoi handling sales and later led its sales team. During that time he was responsible for the restructuring of Oberois Sales & Marketing Division in the Northern Region and was a key member of the team during the McKinsey reengineering process. Biswajit has enormous knowledge of the luxury hotel industry and has proven to be an excellent operations manager, said The Leelas Senior Vice President Rajiv Kaul. Hes an energetic professional with a tremendously effective leadership style, continued Kaul. This dynamic management style led to him being awarded GM of the Year by Hotelier India on December 17. Chakraborty holds a Masters Degree in Commerce from Bangalore University where he spent his childhood. He and his wife, who previously worked in the travel industry with Malaysian Airways and Swiss Air, have two children, daughter Riddhi and son Risheek. In his spare time, Chakraborty loves to read, write poetry and listen to music. A karate instructor, he also enjoys martial arts. And he is passionate about his Honda Civic. Set on 11 lushly-landscaped acres amid waterfalls and lotus ponds, the luxurious Leela Kempinski Mumbai is a tranquil refuge from the hustle and bustle of Indias largest city. Guests enter through towering cast-iron gates and continue up the drive through tropical gardens of palms, mango and banyan trees. Known as one of the premier business hotels in Indias financial capital, The Leela boasts expansive rooms, a spa featuring the renowned ESPA products, a large swimming pool and a gym equipped with personal trainers. Recently the Royal Club, underwent a $25 million renovation. Its prime location five minutes from the international airport and 15 minutes from the domestic airport is a plus for both leisure and business travelers. And with more than 16,000 square feet of meeting space, The Leela is popular with incentives and meeting planners.
