the New Fujitsu UHF
RFID Tracking Technology

Accurate Inventory Control Leads to Huge Cost Savings

FOUNDATION LogicSystems announced that the luxurious new Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada has installed their Linen Manager and Uniform Manager Software Systems which employ the latest advancements in RFID technologies on the market today. The advancement in UHF tag technologies by Fujitsu Frontech has extended the tags read range from 12 inches to more than 6 feet with a substantially higher read rate and with greater accuracy.  As a result, it is now possible to read the contents of a large laundry hamper without having to manually unload the hamper onto a tunnel reader only to reload the hamper on the other side. Therefore, soiled items no longer need to be handled manually – resulting in a substantial reduction in labor.

The Linen Manager Module is simple to implement, cost effective and an easy-to-use system for inventory management and tracking of linen, terry and banquet linen within the enterprise.  Historically shrinkage, excess inventories, losses to vendors and untraceable damage has cost millions of dollars to property operators.  With the new module, FOUNDATION LogicSystems has given operators the tools to track their linen and terry assets, instill accountability, track vendor performance, and optimize inventory levels resulting in huge cost savings.  Marvin Tulman, Founder & CEO stated “For the first time operators will be able to track their linen and terry assets on a day-to-day basis without incurring any additional man-power overhead resulting in a drastic reduction in direct costs and substantial savings in indirect costs.”

an RFID tag and sewn onto towels, linens and uniforms.

Randy Zupanski, General Manager of the 377-room Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel said, “When dealing with an external commercial laundry facility, previous experience in the hotel industry has taught us that inevitably, items go missing. Often these items are never recovered, forcing the hotel to purchase replacements. What’s more, manual tracking processes is time-consuming, and inaccurate.  One of our hotel’s points of difference is the leading-edge technology we offer and the FOUNDATION LogicSystems’ software together with the Fujitsu UHF RFID tags extend this to include housekeeping – our largest department and one that is often overlooked. We anticipate that the RFID tags and software will provide unmatched accuracy and efficiency, plus a significant return on investment by reducing costs.”

The Uniform Manager Module tracks the garments from receiving, to assignment, and through cleaning and repair in “Real Time” using RFID tags.  Every garment is identified and its location is monitored 24 hours a day.  Immediate data provides up-to-the-minute information for the Uniform Department.  The complete garment inventory is maintained instantly.  Employees are accountable for what they have and losses are controlled because manual record keeping errors and disputes are eliminated.  The monitoring of par levels eliminates over buying.  Also, “The Uniform Manager” can interface with most Human Resource, Accounting and/or Purchasing Systems.  This instant information exchange provides precise, accurate data at all times.  “The Uniform Manager” includes an “Integrated Purchasing System”, which allows managers to track budgets by expensing garment purchases to the proper department and it ensures that the property is only billed for items received.  With the extensive reports that are generated by “The Uniform Manager,” management spends less time “putting out fires” and more time on the floor!

Hundreds of soiled towels and sheets are scanned at once as they pass through an RFID portal on their way to a commercial laundry.

Marvin Tulman went on to say, “Not until recently with the introduction of UHF RFID technology, has there been a real and practical solution to the linen and uniform management needs of the Hospitality industry.  Both systems provide an opportunity to save money with a ROI of less than a year - because Inventories and Labor can now be reduced significantly.”

Unified Transponder Concepts, Inc. (UTC) was the system integrator for the hardware on this project.  UTC is a provider of premium HF and UHF Readers and Antennas.  Their experience and expertise has enabled them to create innovative RFID fixtures and solutions in harsh and challenging environments.
