March 30, 2009 - Arizona hotel room rates and occupancy continued to decline as 2009 began and as the recession deepened, a new report shows. Statewide, room rates dropped 11.8 percent and occupancy fell 13.45 percent in January compared with January 2008, according to a report by Los Angeles-based PKF Consulting. Though Tucson fared somewhat better than the state overall, the four local areas surveyed showed an average 10.3 percent drop in rates and a 12.4 percent drop in occupancy rates in the same January-to-January period. The research firm forecasts that by the end of 2009, U.S. occupancy rates will have fallen 9.1 percent from 2007 to just 57.2 percent -- the lowest level since Smith Travel Research, which supplies historical data for PKF's forecast, began tracking national lodging statistics in 1988.
