A Troubling Article!

A Hotel Owner Responds to the Article
The Colour of Hotels - The Politics of Going Green

Dear Editor,

I have been a loyal reader and fan of Hotel Online for many years. I am therefore perplexed that you would allow writing based on unfounded, shoddy, single source citations and misguided opinion to tarnish the good reputation of your publication. I am speaking of the recent article The Colour of Hotels The Politics of Going Green as well as the article lambasting carbon offsets.

This is neither good journalism nor even an attempt to present both sides of the huge issue. I think this writers misuse of a trade publication to spread his baseless rant is a sad state of affairs and one that should be resisted by any and all media who value their good name and journalistic excellence.

Below is a note I recently wrote which sums up my thoughts to those who would tragically try to convince the less informed that Global Climate Change is a hoax and crucial action should be avoided.

I have also copied the article below, underlined some of the objectionable statements and refuted the assertions in bold type. I look forward to hearing from you and discussing how to go forward with the confidence so that your credibility will not be damaged by such fallacious misinformation given to your trusting readers.

All my best,
Tedd

By Tedd Saunders,

I find this tragically troubling for one simple reason - it will enable those who are still ignoring this business trend (and its huge associated business and health risks after almost 2 decades) to continue to sit on their hands with yet another excuse to hide behind their unfortunate inaction.

Exxon Mobil continues to spend millions and millions of dollars (just as the cigarette companies did successfully for years) to raise enough doubts in Americans' minds to create inertia on Global Climate Change.  The fact is that travel and tourism will be one of the industries hardest hit by the increased number of powerful storms created by Climate Disruption - as the world's top scientists are now calling it.

Sadly, there is ample scientific proof that climate impacts/changes are now happening faster than even the most pessimistic computer models predicted recently. Furthermore, it has been shown by NASAs leading Climatologist that we have little more than 8 years (32 Business Quarters!) to dramatically reduce CO2 output globally. After that, the CO2 concentrations will be sufficiently high in the atmosphere (450 ppm) that the melting of the polar caps and Greenland Ice Sheet will become unavoidable according to the wide spread consensus of the worlds top scientists.. The resulting sea level rises and increased storms will severely damage coastal cities as well as seashore properties far and wide, multiply air travel disruptions dramatically, and create problems with all types of agriculture, as well as skiing, foliage and wine-making These are just a few of the weather dependant, hospitality related areas whose stability we all now take for granted.

This is in addition to the commonly anticipated droughts, heat related deaths in cities, reduced drinking water from reduced snow fall, and the spread of insect borne diseases by mosquitos, etc to the northern hemisphere which was previously safe due to its colder temperatures.

Even if this albeit terrifying reality was not looming, the fact is that countless major companies are now including comprehensive lists of environmental questions in their national RFPs to many of the biggest chains and using the hotels responses in their site selection decisions. I asked a colleague from one of the biggest hospitality companies to write in after the previous article and confirm what she had told me at a recent meeting about that promising development. She responded that in answer to those demands they are busily working day and night to take dramatic operational measures before they will go on the record to refute the skeptical comments such as those offered in this article. As further evidence of the consensus for action, most of the big hotel chains are now collectively creating the comprehensive national green hotel standard that they and all hotels will have to meet in order to stay competitive and respectable in the eyes of the traveling public.

As has been proven for many years, almost all environmental measures are good for business as they lower operating costs while building invaluable team pride and new business from concerned travelers. Is there any other business strategy that accomplishes all of those amazing benefits without costing huge investments? Isn't it time we recognized that many in and outside of our industry are, as the age old story goes, arguing over the arrangement of the deck chairs on the Titanic?

It is painfully evident that we need action and those who would rather use their time and effort to try to question and pick apart the obvious situation are delaying the crucial solutions to this well documented crisis that threaten our businesses and our families' very way of life. The time for action is now.

We have so much to lose from doing little or nothing. Some would want you to somehow believe the unfounded naysayers - that claim we don't need to make changes because the current historically unprecedented change in climate globally is just a natural weather cycle. On the other hand, the worst case scenario of taking action on this issue is that we will have cleaner air, more high tech jobs and a highly resilient economy that is self reliant for its energy. We will no longer need to be subject to the whims of radical, undemocratic leaders overseas whose oil has cost the lives of countless innocent civilians and brave young men and woman in American uniform.

You have the power to decide which future your kids will live in. Choose wisely, my friend.

Sincerely,
Tedd Saunders

The Colour of Hotels
The Politics of Going Green

by Barry Napier, November 2007

My recent article on the deception that is global warming, brought a handful of criticisms, even though my words were the result of a lot of research into what is happening. Nothing I said was my opinion everything was based on what scientists say. (PERHAPS A FEW OFF THE WALL SCIENTISTS ARE STILL SAYING THIS STUFF, BUT AT THIS POINT ITS JUST THOSE HANDFUL WHO ARE BEING PAID BY THE LOBBYING COMPANY THAT EXXON/MOBIL PAYS MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO IN THE HOPES THAT PEOPLE WILL BE LULLED INTO A SENSE OF DENIAL AND ALLOW THEM (EXXON /MOBIL TO CONTINUE TO MAKE BILLIONS IN PROFITS IN THE INTERVENEING PERIOD OF INACTION). Then, just yesterday, the founder of the Weather Channel, John Coleman, a prominent and respected meteorologist, openly told us that global warming is an outrageous scam and a manufactured crisis (One News Now, 14th November).  NOT SURE WHAT THIS SOURCE IS BUT I AM SKEPTICAL OF ITS CREDIBLITY

So, what now of my supposed rant? It is not my aim to denigrate hotels that go green. My aim is to save them from acting foolishly by examining all sides of their business, and charging customers more without good business reason. HOTELS ACT FOOLISHLY WHEN THEY DONT RUN THEIR BUSINESS EFFICIENTLY, INCLUDING CONSERVING THEIR COSTLY UTILITY CONSUMPTION I was also accused of being political and that this should never be allowed on a hotel site. I tackle that one later. Meanwhile, it is necessary for background to tell you what Coleman said.

He said he started to examine research papers on the subject, rather than media-induced hysteria (the type currently in vogue and what many individuals and businesses are convinced by). THE MEDIA HAS GOTTEN ON BOARD WITH THIS ISSUE AFTER RESISTING IT FOR MANY YEARS AND THEY HAVE DONE SO BECAUSE THERE IS SUCH WIDESPREAD CONSENSUS FROM CREDIBLE SCIENTISTS AROUND THE GLOBE AND THE FACTUAL AND UNPRECEDENTED EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE SUCH AS THE ROSS ICE SHELF (THE SIZE OF DELAWARE, BREAKING OFF THE POLAR CAP (SEE FEATURE IN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC); THE BLEACHING OF 70% OF THE WORLDS CORALS; OVER 20,000 PEOPLE DYING FROM THE HEAT WAVE IN EUROPE A FEW YEARS AGO; THE  INCREDIBLE REDUCTIONS IN ICE PACK ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS OF THE WORLD 20 MILLION TREES DYING IN ALASKA FROM A PLAGUE OF BARK BEETLES WHO TOOK ADVANTAGE OF WEAKENED TRESS STRUGGLING WITH THE DRYER, WARMER TEMPERATURES; . THE LIST GOES ON AND ON NOW NOT 100 YEARS FROM NOW. He said The more I read them, the more doubt I had and eventually the whole case just collapsed, when you really study the documents. It became very clear that it was a manufactured crisis.

He says the science behind the crisis has been manipulated, and much of the data has been manufactured. This, he says, results in bad science. What a coincidence, that I also said the same thing before he did. Coleman says it was unfortunate that a peer review (alluding to a recent IPCC* activity) were accepted as law, and argues the research passed that review only because of an underlying agenda held by scientists. He says they wish to strike fear of environmental catastrophe if people do not hold to their radical ideas. (*Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change funded by Al Gores pals. Surprised?) THE IPCC IS THE MOST RESPECTED INTL GROUP OD TOP SCIENTISTS EVER BROUGHT TOGETHER THIS MUD SLINGING IS ABSURD. GORE GOT THE NOBEL PRIZE AS DID THE IPCC BUT N EITHER HE NOR HIS PALS FUNDED IT.

In a blog posted on KUSI.com, he dismisses the fears by saying the earth is not in peril. He adds that natural cycles in weather are more responsible for any climate change, THAN CO2 EMISSIONS FROM BURNING FOSSIL FUEL, DEFORSTATION AND THE RELEASE OF METHANE FROM CATTLE, RICE PADDIES AND DECOMPOSING WASTE? I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE STATS BEHIND THAT ASSERTION and over the next two decades there is an equal chance for a cooling trend as there is for a warming trend. THAT IS WHY MANY SCIENTISTS HAVE BEEN CALLING IT GLOBAL CLIMNATE CHANGE BECAUSE IT WILL AFFECT DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD IN DIFFERENT WAYS SOME WILL GET MUCH HOTTER, SOME MUCH COLDER, SOME MUCH DRYER, SOME MUCH WETTER.Finally, he says that once the dire predictions of global-warming scientists fail to pass, people will realise they have been duped. (Source for above quotes: onenewsnow.com November 14th). But, meanwhile Gore can do an awful lot of damage to the economy and hotels, for no good reason. MOST OF THE TOP BUSINESSES IN THE WORLD, INCLUDING GENERAL ELECTRIC, BANK OF AMERICA, WALLMART, NIKE, COCA COLA .ALL REALIZE THAT ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE IS GOOD BUSINESS BECAUSE IT REDUCES THE RISKS TO THEIR COMPANYS STABILITY AND ALSO MAKES THEM RUN MOR EFFICIENT OPERATIONS AND BE RESPONSIVE TO CONSUMER DEMAND.

I wrote my article before John Coleman said all this. John Coleman came to his conclusions by studying the relevant research CLEARLY HE DECIDED WHAT WAS RELEVANT TO HIS BIAS PERSPECTIVE AND DISREGARDING THE OVERWHELMINGLY MAINSTREAM PROOF. papers as a scientist qualified in his field. Some have said I am not qualified to argue my case but this is because they have no idea what my background is. Having taught research methodology to postgraduates, and after arguing the scientific process with physical scientists, I am able to spot fake research work a mile off. Like the UK judge, I dont need to be qualified in a particular science, I only need facts and the capability to examine what is presented. This is the basis of science proper. Remember I came to exactly the same conclusions as Coleman, who is qualified in the field of weather, etc. That proves my point. Global warming is a deception.

Now to the hotel business.

Why discuss these things in an hotel publication? I already answered that one in my article, but perhaps I ought to expand on what I said, because so many people rely on what they read from scientists in the newspapers, and on superbly-made films by Al Gore, causing them to alter the hotel industry and vacationing worldwide.

One of the most recent additions to warmist websites is SaveOurSnow.com, headed by Patrick Thorne, skiing journalist. Now, my critics will listen to what he says. Not because he is qualified but because he follows the trend. But how does he do it? By listing the supposed eco-friendly skiing and greenness aspect of more than 200 ski resorts.  MR. THORNE IS DOING THE WORLD A SERVICE AS ARE ALL THOSE IN THE BUYING PUBLIC, BUSINESS, GOVERNMENT AND THE PRESS WHO ARE ENCOURAGING BEST PRACTICE OR GOOD BEHAVIOR ON THIS ISSUE Why is this significant? Because it panders to all who avidly want change to green as per Al Gore. What it means is that the green giant, who is growing bigger every day, is showing a very nasty side to his personality, bullying everyone into submission.

By working on the fears engendered by Gore, and basing what they think only on his outrageous film (which has been proved to contain lies and deception), I HAVE HEARD THAT A FEW CLAIM THERE WERE A COUPLE OF AREAS WHERE THE FILM EXAGERATED SOME ACTUAL FACT BUT TO SAY IT CONTAINS LIES AND DECEPTION IS UNFOUNDED  individuals, hotels and resorts that are perceived not to be green enough will be avoided. In other words, by listing the greenest resorts, our friendly ski journalist will divert trade from countless resorts that give excellent quality, because they have not toed the green line. (I would be interested to hear from hotels and resorts that have suffered green bullying like this). This activity, of blacking non-greens, will increase. Even a blind man can see that. THE SKI COMPANIES ARE ALL INVOLVED IN TAKING ACTION BECAUSE THEY SEE FIRST HAND THAT MAJOR CLIMATE CHANGES ARE ALREADY CREATING PROBLEMS FOR THEIR BUSINESS AS SNOW FALL HAS DECREASED OVER A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME

Hotels, like all other businesses, watch what happens politically, and operate under national or local political rules. So it is absurd to say I should not speak politically. The UK government admitted that green policies in UK businesses and schools are driven by the agenda of one particular political theory. That is, socialism. It is the same theory behind all green agendas throughout the world. Look at what is being done and the way it is being enforced, and you will see good old socialism, the lifelong enemy of the United States. ITS NOT SOCIALISM, ITS RESPECT FOR THE NATURAL WORLD AND OUR RELIANCE ON THE WEB OF LIFE THAT ALL INDIGENOUS CULTURES HAVE EMBRACED THROUGHOUT TIME (LONG BEFORE POLITICS WAS A KNOWN CONCEPT)

Socialism works well for its leaders, not for those who are unfortunate enough to have nil-political clout. And that is what is happening in the hospitality industry. But behind hotel leaders who obey green demands is Al Gore and his pals, the ones who will reap a massive financial harvest when false greenery takes over. GORE IS DONATING ALL PROFITS FROM HIS FILM AND BOOK TO ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS HELPING TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE THATS PUTTING HIS MONEY WHERE HIS MOUTH IS. AS AN ASIDE, IF PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE FORESIGHT AND COMMITMENT TO INVEST IN A GREENER FUTURE BENEFIT FROM DOING SO, I SAY GREAT, AS IT WILL ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO FOLLOW THEIR LEAD. (BY THE WAY, HOW DOES THIS PROFIT MOTIVE FIT IN WITH THE AGE OLD CRY FROM ANTI-ENVIRONMENTALISTS THAT NOONE COULD MAKE MONEY DOING ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE ACTIONS)

There has been less snow at the Kitzbühel ski resort, so what did the New York Times (16th December 2006) tell us? Why, of course, it was caused by global warming, which it says is a profound threat to skiing! Add to this a view from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, that says I wouldnt invest in Kitzbühel, and you have a great recipe for ruining many hotels and resorts in the region. I have been accused of irresponsible journalism by hiding my head in the sand on this issue. So, what do you call it when a leading newspaper says things like that? And, how on earth can it be said it has nothing to do with hotels, when we are talking about their very survival? And when non-green hotels are effectively being bullied into compliance, costing them a fortune? OF COURSE THIS HAS TO DO WITH HOTELS, ITS ABOUT HOTELS HELPING TO ENSURE A STABLE CLIMATE SO THAT THEIR BUSINESSES CAN BE FINANCIALLY STABLE. I THINK HE IS ARGUING WITH HIMSELF HERE.
And what do you call the actions of the Gaia Napa Valley Hotel and Spa, when, with overtly political motives (under a green banner) removes the Gideon Bible from its rooms and replaces it with a copy of An Inconvenient Truth? (Bloomberg.com April 27th). They have replaced God with a false God Gore and global warming. I SAY HAVE BOTH BOOKS SIDE BY SIDE

The Hotel has received the first California certificate from the US Green Building Council. They look at buildings and hotels to see if they are green enough. Again, we see the punitive side of the green giant comply or you will not be included on the in-list! It is plain as day. How many smaller hotels and chains will be cast aside and lose money? SMALLER HOTELS AND CHAINS CAN DO THESE MEASURES EVEN MORE EASILY THAN THE BIG CHIANS WHO HAVE TO DEVELOP INCREDIBLY COMPLEX SYSTEMS AND PROCEDURES IN ORDER TO MAKE THE CHANGES CONSISTENT ACROSS THEIR THOUSANDS OF PROPERTIES AND AT MUCH GREATER TOTAL COST.

Yet, what the Gaia is doing is NOT going green at all. It is merely saving money, reducing waste and trying to eliminate chemicals. Must I repeat it? This is good management, not going green! I applaud their efforts in this respect, but not the language used. Just remove green and replace it with the far more commendable and honest good management. I AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY WITH THIS UNDERSTANDING THAT GOOD MANAGEMENT AND GREEN ACTIONS ARE ONE IN THE SAME AND LEAD TO THE SAME BOTTOM LINE RESULT YEAH WE AGREE ON SOMETHING.

One big-time hotel operator says it is going green, because we have a social responsibilityand it also makes good business sense. Now we are coming down to it. The whole reason for existence for an hotel is to make money. The tighter it makes its spending, the better will be its profits. Dont bring in social responsibility! That is just a PR ploy. Hotels are in business to make a profit. And if it means being led by false science, thats okay they think, so long as they dont lose out.

Look at theenvironmentblog.org and you will see reports that green hotel businesses have soared as a result of Al Gores propaganda. Doesnt that frighten all those hospitality providers who are unable to use their hard-earned profits to go green in compliance  EXACTLY WHY ARE THEY UNABLE TO TAKE ACTION, SMALL INVESTMENTS LEAD TO MODEST SAVINGA AND BIG INVESTMENTS LEAD TO BIGGER SAVINGS EVERYONE CAN BENEFIT. to false soothsayers? It should do, because they will find no-one will go to their hotels and resorts. They will all go to greenified places because they have been made fearful by bad data. And, green hotels tend not to use suppliers who have not yet become just as green. This is commercial bullying and business/ideological blackmail. DOES HE FEEL THIS WAY WHEN COMPANIES CHOOSE TO AVOID CHILD LABOR, SWEAT SHOPS THIS IRRESSPONSIBLE CORPORATE BEHAVIOR IS COMPLETELY ANALOGOUS TO THAT ONE.Think it wont matter? In the UK, when new over-the-top rules came out for nursing homes, a few thousands homes were forced into closure, because they could not comply. The costs were just too high. The same will happen in our green lands. Wait and see (or, better fight it).

Already, more people are staying in their own countries rather than face the wrath of environmentalists who condemn air travel. (travelmole.com). Cant these folks see that they can produce just as much carbon at home as they can abroad? YES PEOPLE CAN PRODUCE AS MUCH CARBON AT HOME AS THEY DO WHEN ABROAD BUT THE CON TRAILS OF EXHAUST AND CONDENSATION THAT PLANES DEPOSIT HIGH IN OUR ATMOSPHERE ARE DISPROPORTIONATELY DESTRUCTIVE TO THE CLIMATE. And cant green hotel chains see that they probably produce more carbon when building new green hotels than they do in a lifetime of not going green? PERHAPS THIS IS TRUE BUT IS HE SUGGESTING WE SHOULD STOP ALL BUILDING AND GROWTH?! And what about the hidden fact that green is eliminating free speech, freedom of economic activity, and choice of energy use?

You still think this has nothing to do with hotels? In the UK a meddling influential green group soon hope to stop all imports of third world fruit and veg (and all done quietly away from public gaze). Why? Because they are brought in by air, which increases carbon emissions. But look closer over 75% of all UK fruit and veg, vital for hotels, are imported! A sudden stop on imports will clear supermarkets and local shops of these products.

The chain-reaction will lead to an attempt to increase provisions produced in the UK at a very inflated price. And this will be passed on to hotels. Therefore, the customer will pay more. Guess what is the hidden truth behind all this? The green group is linked to the UK producers and, guess what? The carbon footprint of UK growers is almost ten times greater than the carbon footprint of third world farmers and aviation emissions combined!  I WOULDNT BE SURPRISED IF THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF FARMERS IN INDUSTRIALIZED NATIONS IS 10 TIMES HIGHER THAN IN THE THIRD WORLD WHERE THEY DONT HAVE DEISEL FARM EQUIPMENT, ELECTRICITY THE AVIATION EMMISISONS ARE ANOTHER THING AND IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT STAT THE HE CLAIMED IS VALID

Thus, UK farmers win, customers lose, and third world farmers, already on the brink of starvation, are crushed, and people die. And, on top of it all, there is no proof whatever that air travel causes global warming. PERHAPS HE SHOULD DO SOME RESEARCH ON SCIENTIFIC WEBSITES THAT CAN PROVE THE CONNECTION. Do hotels feel comfortable with that?

Some tried swiftly to blame the recent California forest fires on global warming. THE FIRES ARE CAUSED BYA NUMBER OF CONTIBUTING ISSUES INCLUDING DRYER  LAND AREAS, WITH LOTS OF DEAD BRUSH ACTING AS FUEL Oh dear! When they asked around the experts, even the environmentalist treehugger.com discovered that the number of fires is not linked to the temperature! And how many warmists ignored the claim that the fires were started deliberately anyway? YES SOME WERE STARTED BY ARSONISITS BUT THEY GREW OUT OF CONTROL BECAUSE OF THE CONDITIONS ON THE GROUND The same website (26th May) quoting a scientist, said that most folks only read the media, and tend to grasp the hand of anyone who holds a similar viewpoint. EXACTLY WHAT THIS WRITER HAS DONE HOW IRONIC! True. That is how ordinary social discourse operates. But when it happens in a whole industry, it spells trouble.

This issue is essential, because politicians use the work of scientists and other academics. They have no idea if what they are being told is accurate or not. Yet, they will side with the one who has the same ideology and make policies on the strength of them. These are passed on in the taxation system, management guru sessions and shop-floor know-it-alls. In other words, politics drives those with big money, who care less about policies than they do about the bottom-line.
Politic.co.uk contains a forum for hotels. Wonder why? Amazon sells books on hotels and politics. In the UK, which is overrun by illegal immigrants, hotels are part of political moves to house them. A new book Class Acts: Service and Inequality in Luxury Hotels contains material on politics. And ingentaconnect.com refers to hotels as sites of power (quoted from The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, 3rd Sept. 2007). HOW DOES THIS PERTAIN?

Oxford University held a conference on themes centred on design and politics. This is because, whether critics like it or not, all decisions about what we do can be labelled political. (3rd Annual Architectural Humanities Research Association international conference, Nov 2006). ALSO OFF SUBJECT

It is very naïve and short-sighted to ignore politics which is the very basis on which we act! Look at a simple definition of politics in Wikipedia: Politics is the process by which people make decisions (and) is observed in all human group interactions, including corporate It consists of social relations involving authority or power and the methods and tactics used to formulate and apply policy. So, when directors of hotels formulate their policies, they are acting politically. Politics have everything to do with hotels and resorts!

So, dont shoot the messenger! I passed-on what non-warmist scientists are saying, and I have looked at the bad research of pro-warmists. We must look beyond the media hype to find the truth. Al Gore is creating a super-maelstrom that will lead to disaster in our time, but big bucks for himself. AGAIN WITH THE UNFOUNDED ACCUSATIONS And hotels are a big part of it, by complying.

The answer is very simple separate good management practices from green, and separate green from saving the planet, because they are all different entities. Green is to do with birds and flowers and how we use land. Saving the planet is a fairy-story, a myth that will cost us dearly in so many ways. The more lies we adopt, the worse become business ethics. And if you still think this has nothing to do with hotels, well, naivete can beat the best of people. There is no need to rely on what I say I am nobody just examine all the facts, instead of trying to silence critics, which is an activity of those who want compliance rather than truth.  THE BUSH ADMISNISTRATION IS ACTUALLY THE ONE TRYINY TO SILENCE CRITICS INCLUDING THEIR OWN TOP SCIENTISTS (JIM HANSON) ON THIS ISSUE. ITS NOT THE PRO ENVIRONMENT PEOPLE WHO ARE SQUASHING THE TRUTH.
Anyway, dont get me wrong - I am 100% behind hotels and resorts that use excellent management sense.  Come on, friends truth is incompatible with lies. The trouble is, finding out which is which and we dont find out the answer by blocking genuine facts and statements!
