Dec. 13, 2007 - TRINIDAD -- Construction has begun on a new 117-suite boutique hotel at the Cougar Canyon Golf Resort Community.

The Cougar Canyon Golf Resort and Spa, located 1 mile northeast of Trinidad, is scheduled to open in the spring of 2009. It will feature a spa, restaurant and lounge, shop, concierge service and a business center. Amenities will include a pool, hot tub and fitness center.

The hotel also will include a 3,000-square-foot event center accommodating up to 450 people, as well as a 900-square-foot executive board room with a private reception area. The event center can function as one room, or split into as many as six individual meeting rooms.

Eric Seise Jr., managing director for Cougar Canyon, said the decor would reflect local history.

"We've taken a western feel with a contemporary edge," Seise said.

The "nouveau west" look will incorporate reds and black, paying homage to the red brick streets in town and the coal that was mined in the area. Public spaces will feature earthy tones and natural materials, he said.

Cougar Canyon community offers homes beginning in the $290,000 range and features an 18-hole golf course created by Nicklaus Design, a 3,000-acre nature preserve and an 8-mile walking trail.
