Carmel Valley Ranch Completes Multi-million Dollar Renovation and
Restoration of its Signature Championship Golf Course;
Original Pete Dye Design Remains Intact
CARMEL, Calif. April 17, 2007 Carmel Valley Ranch (www.CarmelValleyRanch.com) will re-open its signature championship golf course in May 2007, after a multi-million dollar renovation and restoration. The Pete-Dye-designed course will offer an elevated quality of play with an enhanced course design and newly renovated club facilities. The completion of the golf course and clubhouse marks the initial phase of Carmel Valley Ranchs revitalization program which will touch every aspect of the 400-acre property.

Led by the Gene Bates Design Group, the Carmel Valley Ranch golf course enhancement maintains the integrity of the original Pete Dye design. Dye himself was consulted prior to construction. Highlights include newly leveled teeing grounds, enlarged green complexes, rebuilt greens, reshaped bunkers including and new sand, an improved drainage and irrigation system and approximately 8,000 feet of newly paved cart path. The resort will also debut a new fleet of Club Car premier golf carts, and has partnered with Nike to offer the latest performance equipment including rental clubs, balls and shoes.

While the original Pete Dye design remains intact, players will definitely see significant changes in course structure and quality when playing the restored course, specifically leveled tee boxes, gained yardage and additional bunkers to tighten fairways and approach shots on several holes, said Rob Turner, director of golf for Carmel Valley Ranch.

In addition, the entire course has been reseeded with a combination of premium and native grasses which provides a unique aesthetic of grass color variations among tees, greens and rough. Plush T-1 Bentgrass covers all tees, fairways and putting surfaces (which is unique from nearly every other course on the Monterey Peninsula which use poa annua), while a combination of Bluegrass and Rye is used in the rough. In an eco-friendly move to conserve water usage, the course boasts approximately 15 acres of drought tolerant native grasses planted throughout the design. This unique grass mixture provides contrasting hues of green throughout the course, as well as color changes from season-to-season.

Within the resorts distinct Clubhouse facilities, designer Ina Johnson has created a modern oasis.  The lobby, restaurant and bar areas have been completely refurbished, incorporating leather upholstery, custom-designed Italian furniture, face-cut wood and warm cast-metals, within a palette of greens and blues that echo the fairways seen through floor-to-ceiling windows. Strategically-placed plasma screen televisions complete the experience. In addition, the Clubhouse offers a redesigned golf pro shop, updated locker rooms and a new menu at the Clubhouse Restaurant.

Located beyond the Monterey Peninsula fog belt, the championship course at Carmel Valley Ranch offers multiple elevation changes. The courses front nine wanders along the Carmel Valley River, while the back nine travels up into hillsides frequented by deer and wild turkey.  Resort guests, club members and local residents can enjoy the course which opened in 1981, and remains the only Pete Dye designed golf facility in Northern California.
