Named Turning Stone Director of Hotel, Spa Operations |
Oneida Nation Homelands— Michael Tompkins, former associate
managing director and director of health and healing at Canyon Ranch in
the Berkshires, has been named director of hotel and spa operations at
the Oneida Indian Nation’s Turning Stone Resort and Casino. During his five years at the award-winning Canyon Ranch, Tompkins became known nationwide as an expert on wellness, fitness, and the spa industry. He has been interviewed by CNN, the Associated Press, Pulse magazine, radio stations from Boston to Minneapolis, and several other trade and news organizations on the spa industry and trends in health and wellness. He also has been a featured speaker at trade shows and seminars in Dallas and Orlando. Tompkins is a registered nurse and spent several years in the health care field before making the jump to the hospitality industry. He also is a licensed massage therapist. At Canyon Ranch, Tompkins led a team of managers and staff that comprised 18 departments, overseeing the resort’s hotel, spa, and health and healing operations. Under his direction, Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires was named the No. 1 destination spa in North America and the Caribbean by the Conde Nast Readers Poll in 2002 and 2003. In 2003 and 2004, the resort was named the No. 1 luxury resort destination in America by Departures magazine/American Express cardholders. At Turning Stone, Tompkins oversees the daily operations of the resort’s four hotels and the existing spa. He also will be responsible for the Tower fitness center on the third floor and for the new luxury spa, currently in the planning and design stages, adjacent to The Lodge. “What first interested me in Turning Stone was the vision of what the Nation wants to create here as a destination resort,” Tompkins said. “To be instrumental in creating a new spa experience, and in bringing Native American culture into the spa treatments and overall experience – that excited me. I love new things, and I love being able to help bring all the pieces together to realize the vision the Nation started out with.” A native of the Hudson Valley region, Tompkins earned degrees in business administration and nursing from Columbia-Greene Community College. He received his licensed massage therapist training at Berkshire Community College. |
