Avalon Hotel Partners LLC, Retains Control of the
Avalon Hotel & Spa; Wins Court Ruling
PORTLAND, Ore. October 23, 2003 - Avalon Hotel Partners LLC, an investor group that owns the Avalon Hotel & Spa and adjacent Rivers Restaurant, has won a court ruling that allows the company to retain control of the property.

The ruling, handed down by Judge Randall L. Dunn in U.S. Bankruptcy Court last week, denied a motion filed on behalf of one of the investor companies. That company, owned by A. Paul Brenneke, sought to dismiss an earlier Chapter 11 debt reorganization filing by Avalon Hotel Partners.

The Avalon Hotel & Spa and Rivers are definitely on the right track to regain their financial health, said Bruce Hraba, president of Waterford Hotels and Inns, Inc., the propertys management company. The Avalon Hotel Partners filed the Chapter 11 petition in good faith to protect this progress, and were pleased that the court affirmed that intent.

In September, it was prematurely announced that a new investor group had purchased the Avalon Hotel & Spa and Rivers in an auction required by the Avalon Hotel Partners bylaws. Avalon Hotel Partners Chapter 11 filing, however, blocked the auction by placing a stay on actions against the group or property.

Though this dispute among owners hampered the propertys upswing, Avalon Hotel Partners is now proceeding with its reorganization plans and business continues to build at the luxury hotel, spa and restaurant.

We hope our guests are only aware that our four-star accommodations and service are superb, said Avalon Hotel & Spa Managing Director Pierre Zreik. Room bookings are up and spa bookings consistently meet our goals. The hotel, spa and Rivers are approaching the high standards we set for ourselves and we have more enhancements planned.

Earlier this summer, we were able to bring management of Rivers under the same team that operates the hotel and spa, Zreik explained. This means our service throughout the property is seamless and first rate.

Rivers has undergone a complete makeover of its culinary team. Since April 2003, the restaurant has added Executive Chef Rolland Wesen, Wine Director Jim Biddle, Food & Beverage Director Bert Lampe and Restaurant Manager Claudine Pépin.

Recent restaurant reviews have noted the changes positively. Now with a heralded new chef Rollie Wesen at the restaurants helm, Rivers is beginning to find its current, said Roger J. Porter in his review for Willamette Week.

The Avalon Hotel & Spa, on the riverfront at 0455 Hamilton Court, Portland, Oregon, is the only one in the state with the amenities of a destination spa and resort incorporated into its original design. With 99 beautifully-appointed guestrooms and suites offering contemporary accommodations and its full-service fitness club and spa, the quietly elegant Avalon is the only Oregon member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
