Spa Resort Casino in Palm Springs; Designed by Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo |
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - April 2003 - Construction is under way for
an ambitious $90 million new casino project in the heart of Palm Springs
that has been designed by architects Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG)
for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. The new Spa Resort
Casino will cover an entire city block and is expected to turn Palm Springs
into California's premiere casino destination.
When completed, the casino will feature 1,000 slots, 40 table games, a player's club, three restaurants, a 150-seat entertainment lounge, and a central bar on the casino floor. |

The casino's design reflects its unique location.
Lou Estrella, WATG's senior leader in charge of the project, explains,
"The two-story stucco structure was designed as an urban destination resort
that blends with the existing architecture of Palm Springs."
The design integrates elements that represent the Agua Caliente culture through subtle use of patterns, details, and materials. According to WATG's project architect Brian Husting, "Fountains, railings, rounded turrets and blue concrete roof tile evoke the tribe's historic association with the Agua Caliente Spring and nearby water sources. The décor includes a tribute to the tribe's history and several Indian artifacts, but it's not Indian themed." The architecture has a richly detailed elegance that may surprise casino customers. "The design team is world-class," according to Palm Springs city planner Doug Evans, noting that the tribe's commitment to high quality is expressed in WATG's detailing of the project and in Dougal Design's selection of interior finishes. "We were able to fast-track the design and construction process to meet an ambitious opening date target of November 2003," notes Estrella, "thanks to great teamwork with the client and other consultants." WATG has been involved in the creation of over 60 gaming projects and the design of destinations for Native American Indians. The firm recently designed the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino; the Palace Tower at Caesars Palace, and the MGM Grand Mansions in Las Vegas; Regency Casino Thessaloniki in Greece; Atlantis, Paradise Island Casino Resort in the Bahamas; and Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort in Arizona. Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG) was founded in 1945. WATG has worked in over 130 countries and territories across six continents from its offices in Newport Beach, Orlando, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Seattle, London, and Singapore. |
