The Architectural Transformation of the Tariff Building in
Washington DC Puts Kimpton's Monaco Hotel
in the National Trust Historic Hotels Program
WASHINGTON, DC, April 8, 2003 - Hotel Monaco Washington DC has been accepted into the National Trust Historic Hotels of America, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Hotel Monaco Washington DC is rich in history and architectural integrity. The hotel is an example of one of the nation's most stunning architectural transformations.  Kimpton Boutique Hotels and the United States General Services Administration worked together on the rehabilitation of this National Historic Landmark - Washington's General Post Office Building, also known as the Tariff Building. In fact, the opening of the Hotel Monaco Washington DC is viewed as a major element of the city's redevelopment of the downtown historic district. Neighbors include the International Spy Museum and the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery.

Kimpton Boutique Hotels utilized its tremendous expertise in the area of adaptive reuse to create the 184-room hotel from a relic 19th century government building. The General Post Office Building was the first all-marble building in Washington.

Completed in 1842, the home of Hotel Monaco was designed by Robert Mills, the designer of the Washington Monument. In 1855, Thomas Walter, one of the architects of the United States Capitol building, created the design for an extension on the north façade of the building.  The addition was completed in 1866.

"There's no better validation of a hotel's rich historic character than to be associated with the National Trust and Historic Hotels of America," said Thierry Roch, executive director of Historic Hotels of America. "By inviting the Hotel Monaco Washington DC into our collection of distinguished properties, we are continuing to encourage historic preservation.  Our goal is to bring these historically special hotels and their authentic experiences to the attention of the traveling public by providing alternatives to commonplace lodging."

To be selected for membership in National Trust Historic Hotels, a hotel must be at least 50 years old, listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places or recognized locally as having historic significance.

"We are proud to be affiliated with such a prestigious organization as National Trust Historic Hotels of America," stated Jorge Trevino, general manager of the Hotel Monaco Washington DC.

Established in 1989 with 32 charter members, National Trust Historic Hotels of America is a diverse collection of properties ranging form large luxury hotels in major cities to small-town inns, country retreats and polished resorts throughout the country.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to protecting the irreplaceable.
