Kemmons Wilson, who founded Holiday Inn and revolutionized the hotel
industry, has died at the age of 90. He was born in Osceola, Arkansas One
of the famous "Kemmons Wilson's Twenty Tips for Success" reads: "Only work
half a day. It doesn't matter which half you work -- the first 12 hours
or the second 12 hours."
Michael Silberstein has resigned his position of Managing Director at
the New York Palace. He may assist ownership as an outside consultant
for months to come. Silberstein, a 1974 Cornell graduate, had joined the
hotel in June 2001. He also had a distinguished career with Six Continents
(then still named Bass) as a Vice President Operations for the Americas.
Starwood has appointed Harris Chan at the head of Li Ka Shing¹s
Our Lucaya in the Bahamas. Chan most recently was the General Manager of
the Orchid at Mauna Lani (which has since become a Fairmont property) and
also held the same position at the Sheraton at Fisherman's Wharf in San
Francisco.
Andy Papoutsis has been appointed Vice President and Managing Director
of the Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort & Golf Club. Papoutsis most recently
was with Wyndham International where he served as the Regional Vice President
of Operations, Southeast Region while simultaneously holding the post of
General Manager at the Wyndham Atlanta Downtown. Prior to that, Papoutsis
was with Stouffer Renaissance Hotels & Resorts for seventeen years.
He replaces Reinhard Werthner who has been promoted to the position of
Vice President of Hotel Development for Tishman Hotel Corporation, after
eight years as Vice President and Managing Director of the Westin Rio Mar
Beach. Werthner, a Cornell graduate, was previously with Marriott for fifteen
years.
Edward Walter, current Chief Operating Officer of Host Marriott Corporation
has become Chief Financial Officer of the Company. Robert Parsons, Jr.,
who has been with the Company since 1981, will be leaving the company in
the second quarter to pursue other opportunities.
Dominique Marty has been appointed General Manager of the Tremont Wyndham
in Boston. He was previously with Interstate Hotels for ten years.
In his latest position, he was Director of Operations at the Westin Bonaventure
in Los Angeles. Marty returns to Boston where he worked for eight years
at the Charles Hotel and the Ritz-Carlton.
Ted Karmen has been appointed Regional Vice President by Sunstone Hotels.
Michael Sullivan has been named Vice President of Asset Management with
Sunstone. Sullivan was previously with Colony Capital. Sunstone Hotels
has had several recent changes since acquiring a portfolio of hotels from
Wyndham.
Otto Svensson has been promoted to Vice President/Area General Manager
at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead. He had been the General Manager at the hotel
for three years. Originally from Germany, Svensson joined the Ritz-Carlton
Hotel Company thirteen years ago at the Ritz-Carlton, Atlanta. For several
years, he was the company¹s Vice President.
Tod Morrow has been promoted to Hotel Manager of the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead.
He began his career with Ritz-Carlton twelve years ago at the Ritz-Carlton,
Naples. He joined the Buckhead team as Executive Assistant Manager, Rooms
Division in 2001.
Ed Conway has been named General Manager of the Monarch Hotel, in Dublin,
California.
The Monarch is part of PVI Hotels, a small group with nine properties
in Northern California. Conway was previously General Manager of
the Greenhorn Creek Resort where he has been replaced by the owner's son-in-law
Bill Murphy who holds the title of Managing Partner. Prior to that, Conway
was Director of Operations with the California Culinary Academy and General
Manager at the Hotel Savoy in San Francisco.
Kevin Galica has been appointed Director of Sales at the Four Seasons
Atlanta. He was previously Director of Sales at the Four Seasons Hotel
Philadelphia and has been with Four Seasons Hotel and Resorts for the past
five years.
Jack Breisacher has been named Director of Sales and Marketing at the
Swissôtel Chicago. Breisacher brings over thirty years experience
in Sales and Marketing. He was previously with Hilton Hotels Corporation
for four years as Area Director of Marketing in Chicago. Prior to that,
he was part of the opening team at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel as Director
of Sales and Marketing and also worked with Renaissance Hotels as Vice
President of Sales.
Jean-Marc Jalbert has been promoted to Corporate Director of Food and
Beverage for Sofitel North America and will be based out of Dallas. He
was previously Director of Operations at the Sofitel Chicago, which opened
last June 2002.
Grant MacPherson has been appointed Executive Chef by Las Vegas-based
Wynn Resorts. His mandate? To open the company¹s Macau project
in China prior to coming home to Las Vegas and open Le Rêve in 2005.
MacPherson is completing a five-year tenure as opening Executive Chef at
Bellagio. At that time, he had been recruited by then-owner Steven Wynn
from Raffles in Singapore, where he was the Executive Chef.
Wolfgang Von Wieser will be replacing Grant MacPherson as Executive
Chef at Bellagio. Originally from Austria, Von Wieser joins from
the Four Seasons Las Vegas, where he was Executive Chef for the past four
years. At Bellagio he is re-joining Vice President of Hotel Operations
Randy Morton, his former General Manager at the Four Seasons Las Vegas
and Director of Food and Beverage Win Person, another Four Seasons transplant.
Also at Bellagio, Mary Maher has been promoted to Assistant Food and
Beverage Director. She was previously Restaurant Manager of Nectar
for two years. Prior to that, she was a Restaurant Manager at New York¹s
Windows on the World.
Laurent Manrique is leaving Campton Place after four years at the end
of next month to become Executive Chef with Aqua Development, the parent
company of four-star Aqua in San Francisco's Financial District. Manrique
is taking over from Michael Mina. In addition to Aqua, Manrique will also
oversee Charles Nob Hill and Pisces. The group's Redwood Park restaurant
closed in January. Manrique had moved to San Francisco from New York
where he was the Chef de Cuisine at the Waldorf-Astoria¹s Peacock
Alley, before Laurent Gras.
At the soon to open Broskstreet Hotel in Ottawa, owned by Sir Terry
Matthews, also the owner of England¹s Celtic Manor Resort, General
Manager Patrice Basille has appointed Michel Tremblay as Director of Food
and Beverage. He was recently in Vancouver at the head of a group of free
standing restaurants. Prior to that, he was the Director of Food and Beverage
at the Molson Center in Montreal.
Tom Stroik has been appointed Director of Sales and Marketing at the
Clift in San Francisco. He was previously with Ritz-Carlton for six
years in the same position in their Cleveland and Marina Del Rey properties.
At Montage Resort & Spa, Bob Mitchell has been named Director of
Sales, and Bud Campbell, National Sales Manager. Prior to joining
Montage, Mitchell spent twelve years at Scottsdale's Phoenician resort,
where he worked his way up to Director of Sales. A native Californian,
Campbell was most recently Regional Sales Manager at Bacara Resort &
Spa in Santa Barbara.
Maurice Constantin has been appointed Director of Food and Beverage
at the Westin Century Plaza. He was most recently in the same position
with the Omni Los Angeles Hotel. Constantin also owned the famed
Le Chardonnay restaurant in Los Angeles for five years.
Billie Andrews has been appointed General Manager of the Wyndham Valley
Forge. She has held other management positions during her ten years with
Wyndham, most recently as General Manager of the Wyndham Garden Hotel in
Mount Olive, New Jersey.
Nelson Hilton has been appointed Director of Sales at the Four Seasons
Miami scheduled to open in October 2003. Hilton joined Four Seasons in
1995 as a Conference Services Manager in Palm Beach, then moved to the
Four Seasons Aviara and into sales and was then promoted to Director of
Sales at the Four Seasons Austin.
Cynthia Boyett will also be joining the Four Seasons Miami from the
Mandarin-Oriental Miami as Director of Catering. She previously worked
with Four Seasons and was a member of the opening team at the Four Seasons
Aviara. Prior to that she was a Catering Manager at the Ritz- Carlton Laguna
Niguel.
Julie Zirbel is leaving her position of Corporate Director of Communications
for Rosewood Hotels and Resorts in Dallas. She had been in this position
for four years and had previously her own marketing communications firm
in Southern California for eight years. Zirbel also was the Director of
Public Relations at the former Kahala Hilton, now the Kahala Mandarin-Oriental
in Honolulu.
Internal moves within Daniel Boulud¹s fast growing empire. Pastry
Chef Rémy Funfrock will be moving from Café Boulud New York
to the soon to open Café Boulud Palm Beach.
Grant Friedman is Hotel Manager at the Muse, in New York. He most recently
functioned as Director of Rooms at the Pierre. He also served eleven years
at the St. Regis New York where he was a member of the opening team.
Scott Roby has been appointed Director of Revenue Management at KSL¹s
La Costa Resort and Spa. He was previously Director of Revenue Management
at the Hilton San Diego Resort and Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines.
John Fleming has been appointed Director of Rooms at the Four Seasons
San Francisco. He originally joined the company in 1989. He has held
positions as the Assistant Rooms Division Manager at the Four Seasons Chicago,
consulting Director of Rooms at the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo and most recently
served as the Director of Rooms at the Regent Hotel Bangkok.
Frank Kawecki has been named General Manager of Mix, a joint venture
between China Grill Management and Alain Ducasse. He was previously General
Manager of the Red Square in Las Vegas, the most profitable restaurant
of the group. Mix is due to open my late spring on New York¹s
58th street, once the location of Eric Demarchelier¹s Jean Lafitte
restaurant.
Michael Murphy has been appointed Director of Catering at the Double
Tree Palm Beach Gardens. He was previously the Food and Beverage Director
at tony Sleepy Hollow Country Club. Murphy is no newcomer to the area,
having held the position of Director of Catering at the Four Seasons Palm
Beach.
Dan King has been appointed General Manager of the Sheraton New Orleans.
He had been transferred last August to Starwood Corporate Headquarters
where he was Area Managing Director of Hotel Centralized Services. Prior
to that he was Area Managing Director with Starwood in Los Angeles. He
also worked as General Manager at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel and
the Renaissance Parc Fifty Five in San Francisco.
Martin McDonough has joined the Ginn Resort Management, LLC team as
Director of Human Resources. Prior to joining Ginn Resorts, he served in
various human resource capacities with Fortune 500 hotel, restaurant and
resort companies. Most recently, McDonough was the owner and principal
of his own Human Resources consulting company.
At the Regent Beverly Wilshire, Scott Mills has been appointed Assistant
Director of Food and Beverage (the Director of food and Beverage position
is currently vacant). Mills transfers from the Four Seasons Dallas where
he held the same title.
Bruno Chemel is the new Chef at Aqua restaurant at the St Regis Monarch
Beach Resort. He was previously with San Francisco¹s Real Restaurant
Group for whom he opened the restaurant Beaucoup in San Francisco.
At Aqua, he replaces Chris L¹Hommedieu, who relocated to New York.
Mitchell Berkman has been appointed Spa Director at La Playa Beach &
Golf Resort. Prior to his appointment he was a Regional Account Manager
for Universal Companies' Florida and Caribbean clients. Berkman¹s
extensive work history includes a hit morning-fitness program in Tuscany,
Supervisor of the Golden Door Spa at Sea on the QE2, and Fitness Director
at the Spa Deus Health and Fitness Resort in Tuscany. |
