to Promote Convention Group Meetings |
San Diego, CA, October 22, 2002 -- Five area
hotels have joined forces to establish the Shelter Island Hotel Group,
an association formed to promote Shelter Island through increased public
awareness as a destination for convention group meetings and individual
leisure travel.
The group of five Shelter Island properties includes the Shelter Pointe Hotel & Marina, Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites, the Bay Club Hotel & Marina, the Island Palms Hotel & Marina and the Holiday Inn San Diego Bayside. Together, the group offers 600 hotel rooms and more than 50,000 square-feet of meeting space. In addition, the natural beauty of their location, its historical significance and convenience to San Diegos major attractions and international airport are all attributes the group is eager to promote. At the center of San Diegos yachting industry, Shelter Island is home to hundreds of boats anchored in its coves and features the panoramic Shoreline Park, a mile-long park and promenade with a public fishing pier, boat launching ramp and sweeping views of the bay. Kevin Konopasek, CHA is President of the Shelter Island Hotel Group and General Manager at the Shelter Pointe Hotel & Marina. According to Konopasek, the group is working to develop strategic plans designed to draw convention business to San Diego. Konopasek says the Shelter Island Hotel Group will also focus on the individual leisure traveler by advertising to local San Diegans and individuals from outlying areas, such as Los Angeles and Orange County who may want to experience a weekend get-a-way. The group will promote Shelter Island to leisure travelers outside of California as well. Whats really great about Shelter Island is the diversity of hotels ranging from small boutique properties like the Bay Club to the larger, more luxurious Shelter Pointe and Humphreys which have so much charm, said Tammy Garbini, Director of Sales at the Bay Club Hotel. Each of us has our own unique character. Next year Shelter Island, the auto-accessible peninsula created by the Port of San Diego in 1953, will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Although specific events to commemorate its creation have not yet been identified, Konopasek says the Shelter Island Hotel Group will most certainly be involved as they continue to help bring awareness to the island. |
