The Mural Dining Room in Grand Teton National Parks
Jackson Lake Lodge Completes Refurbishment;
Famous Murals by Carl Roters Left Unchanged

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, May 20, 2002 The Mural Dining Room in Grand Teton National Parks Jackson Lake Lodge has completed a major refurbishment to enhance the interior and effectively highlight the restaurants dramatic location within the park. Jackson Lake Lodge and the Mural Dining Room opened for the season on Sunday, May 19.

Recognized for its 100-foot panoramic windows offering unobstructed views of the Grand Teton Mountain Range, the full-service restaurant also has introduced a new Rocky Mountain Chop House-themed menu offering creatively prepared Western fare.

The Mural Dining Room renovation included the installation of a new rough-hewn oak hardwood floor, new

seating, new draperies, upholstery and customized carpeting.  All of the components were specifically selected to spotlight the restaurants famed 11-foot wall murals depicting trappers and fur traders of the Old West.

Designed by Jackson-based Gallinger Trauner Designs, Inc., the new Mural Dining Room features rich colors of deep gold, burnt orange and navy blue, carefully chosen to reflect the natural colors of the Teton Range and Jackson Lake. Designers developed a more inviting seating arrangement throughout the restaurant. In the rear of the restaurant, for example, the designers enhanced the views of the mountains and the back-wall mural by raising the floor level. Iron railings separating the two floor levels feature cut-outs of western scenes like cowboys, trees and mountains. Leather-look wallpaper and custom-made antler sconces add interest to the walls.

The Mural Dining Room first opened in 1957. That year, John D. Rockefeller, Jr.  commissioned famed muralist Carl Roters to paint murals on 11 eight-foot rosewood and walnut panels to decorate the dramatic room. After researching the Jackson area, Roters chose the activities of trappers and fur traders of the West as his central mural theme. For two years, he painstakingly painted the 700-square-foot murals in his Syracuse, N.Y. studio. When completed, the murals were displayed at special exhibitions in New York and were finally shipped to Jackson Lake Lodge in 1959.

The murals were the only feature in the restaurant that we didnt change, said Tim Smith, director of hotel operations for Grand Teton Lodge Company. The new Mural Dining Room is much more accurately reflective of the restaurants Western setting and now draws the attention of diners to both the panoramic views out the window and the artistically and historically significant artwork on the walls.

Developed by executive chef Joseph A. Santangini, the new dinner menu features a variety of steaks and chops, fish, chicken and pasta, plus appetizers and salads.  Examples include Pan-Seared Duck Breast, Prime Rib of Buffalo, Slow-Roasted Pork Chop, Pan-Seared Idaho Red Trout, and Grilled Venison Sausage.

The restaurant has a capacity to seat 300 people and typically serves up to 500 people each evening. The restaurant also is open for lunch and dinner.

Grand Teton Lodge Company operates lodging, restaurants, tours and activities at Jackson Lake Lodge, Jenny Lake Lodge and Colter Bay Village within Grand Teton National Park and the Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club in Jackson, Wyo.
