Churchill Hotel in Washington, D.C.; Formerly the Sofitel |
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 29, 2002 Whitewood, LLC,
a Charleston, S.C.-based hotel development group, today announced the completion
of a multi-million dollar renovation of The Churchill Hotel on Connecticut
Avenue in Washington, D.C. The former Sofitel hotel remained open
during the comprehensive renovation that focused on a complete remodeling
of the guest rooms/suites and baths; public areas, including the lobby
and meeting rooms; and developing a new upscale restaurant and bar.
With the completion of this restoration, The Churchill is once again one of the finest historic hotels in the D.C. market, said P. Steven Dopp, managing partner of Whitewood, LLC. Our goal was to carefully renovate this historic property to reposition it for the long term as a classic, comfortable, European-style, four-star hotel. We are confident that we have accomplished that goal. The Churchill has qualified for membership in Historic Hotels of America, an elite group of hotels nationwide at least 50 years old that are listed in, or eligible for, the National Register of Historic Places, Dopp said. We think this designation will help us attract both business and leisure travelers coming to the D.C. area, looking for a unique lodging experience that combines the best of the old and the new. Our management company, MeriStar Hotels & Resorts, has a good deal of experience with boutique urban hotels, and we look forward to working with them again. Located in the heart of Embassy Row in the Kalorama district, and featuring scenic views of the city, the newly renovated hotel features oversized guest rooms and suites, each with a study and an array of special amenities, including European-style bedding, data ports, facsimile line, two or three telephones, voice mail in five languages. The hotels elegant new Chartwell Grill serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Chartwell Grill lounge offers lighter fare and afternoon or late night cocktails in a relaxed setting. Room service is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The property also features 1,800 square feet of meeting space in four rooms, which can accommodate groups of up to 90 people. The Churchill is a landmark hotel with an excellent location in one of the nations best hotel markets, said John Emery, president and chief operating officer of MeriStar Hotels & Resorts. We plan to take advantage of obvious cross-marketing opportunities with our other six managed hotels in Washington and seven properties in Maryland and Northern Virginia, to maximize revenues. We are confident that The Churchill Hotel will quickly become one of Washingtons leading boutique hotels. This is our third assignment for this ownership group, and we look forward to expanding our relationship in the future. MeriStar Hotels & Resorts operates 276 hospitality properties with more than 58,000 rooms in 42 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada, including 55 properties managed by Flagstone Hospitality Management, a subsidiary of MeriStar Hotels & Resorts.
