ORLANDO, Fla., April 2002 - The Educational Institute of the American
Hotel & Lodging Association has announced this year�s winners of the
�Stars of the Industry� awards for champions of hospitality training and
education. The following people and properties were honored at the 22nd
annual �Stars of the Industry� luncheon, Thursday, April 4, during the
AH&LA Annual Conference and Leadership Forum/The Lodging Expo in Philadelphia,
Pa.
Hasmukh P. Rama, CHA, is the 2002 recipient of the Arthur Landstreet Award. Named after the Tennessee hotelier who founded the Educational Institute, the Arthur Landstreet award is presented to an individual who has made a lasting impact on the quality of education andtraining in the hospitality industry. Rama, chairman and CEO of JHM Hotels, Inc., Greenville, S.C., exemplifies the qualities of dedication, leadership, and generosity in promoting education in the hospitality industry. He is a past chairman of the American Hotel & Lodging Association and has served on the board of advisors for a number of hospitality schools, including Johnson & Wales University, New York University, The University of Houston, and California Polytechnic University. He has offered his time, experience, and services to the mentorship program in hospitality at Cornell University. And in 1998, JHM Hotels presented a $1 million scholarship donation to the American Hotel Foundation to assist minority students seeking careers in the lodging industry. Rama�s career in hospitality began nearly 30 years ago when he purchased a 40-room independent property in Pomona, Cal. Today, his corporation, JHM Hotels, owns and operates 29 hotels with 4,000 rooms in six states, with more properties under development. He earned his MBA from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1997, Johnson & Wales awarded the degree of Doctor of Business Administration in Hospitality Management, honoris causa, to Rama for his success in the hospitality industry. Rama was named winner of the �Oberoi Award of Excellence� by the Asian American Hotel Owners Association in 1989, �Economy Lodging Person of the Year� by AH&LA�s Lodging Council in 1993, and �Hospitality Leader of the Year� by the University of South Carolina School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management in 2001. Rama received Marriott�s �Spirit to Serve Award� for outstanding community service in 2000. EI presented four Lamp of Knowledge Awards this year. These awards are given to individuals and companies who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to advancing the quality of professionalism in the hospitality industry. This year�s honorees are:
