January 2002 - A group of alumni and friends has established the James C. Peter Rainsford, director of the School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management, indicated, Not only is this scholarship endowment a wonderful tribute to Jim Doherty, but it will also provide much needed financial support to a needy and deserving student.

Mr. Doherty currently serves as the executive vice president of Lebhar-Friedman, Inc., a leading communications company located in New York City.  Lebhar-Friedman publishes a number of magazines including Nations Restaurant News; produces several renowned trade shows including FS/TEC, MUFSO, SPARCS, and SPECS; and is involved in a number of other business ventures including Lebhar-Friedman book publishing.

A graduate of the University of Denver, Mr. Doherty has had a distinguished career in the hospitality industry.  Included among the positions he has held are: president and CEO of Acapulco Restaurants, president and CEO of A&W International, vice president of marketing and development for Red Lobster Inns, and publisher and editor of Nations Restaurant News.  Mr. Doherty also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Culinary Institute of America, is on the Board of Directors of The American Academy of Chefs, is a member of the National Restaurant Associations International Relations Taskforce, and is past chairman of the Board of Childrens Institute International.

Jim Doherty stated, I am deeply appreciative of this wonderful surprise and honor in having a scholarship in my name. A great big thank you to those responsible for this gift to the University of Denver.  The University of Denver provided me an outstanding education and foundation for a fabulous career in the restaurant and hospitality industry.  I, in fact, attended the University on a scholarship from the American Hotel and Motel Association and have been ever thankful for the educational opportunity that the scholarship provided.  This new scholarship program will provide ongoing assistance to deserving students over many years.  It is my wish that each student have a career as interesting and rewarding as I have experienced.
