Following the success of the Fourth Biennial Conference on Tourism in Southeast Asia & Indo-China, which took place in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in June 2000, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (School of Hotel and Tourism Management), University of Houston (Conrad N. Hilton College), and University of Angers (ESTHUA) are pleased to announce the Fifth Biennial Conference on Tourism Industry: Development, Marketing and Sustainability.  This conference is presented with a revised geographic theme of �Tourism in Asia� that reflects the importance and significance of tourism in the Asian continent in recent years. The Conference will be take place immediately after the First Asia Pacific Forum for Graduate Students Research in Tourism scheduled on May 22 in the Institute For Tourism Studies (IFT), Macau.

This conference seeks to provide international tourism and hotel industry community with an opportunity to learn about tourism/hotel industry development and marketing opportunities in Asia. It will provide tourism educators, academicians, industry practitioners and researchers with an interdisciplinary forum for exchange of information pertaining to recent research in tourism. The Conference program will feature keynote speeches by important government and tourism organization representatives in the region, regional tourism industry leaders, and prominent international experts on tourism development and marketing as well as competitively selected paper presentations by researchers.

CONFERENCE PROGRAM

The Conference will start with a welcome reception at 6:00pm on May 23 and end with a luncheon on May 25. The Conference Program will include one cocktail reception, two lunches, one dinner, and a harbor cruise tour in Hong Kong.

CONFRERENCE REGISTRATION AND HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS

All presenters and participants are requested to register for the conference. Conference Registration fee will be US$295 before January 31, 2002 and US$345 thereafter. For those delegates who will register for the First Asia Pacific Forum for Graduate Students Research in Tourism which will be held at the Institute For Tourism Studies (IFT) in Macau on May 22 (Please refer to conference announcement for First Asia Pacific Forum for Graduate Students Research in Tourism) a special registration of US$355 ($395 after January 31, 2002) will be offered for participation in both event. 

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Conference will focus on a broad range of topics related to research in tourism and invites papers related to direct or indirect relevance to tourism in Asia. Considering the three-pronged theme of the conference on �Development, Marketing and Sustainability,� a paper with any of the following or related subjects would be highly appropriate for presentation.
 

  • Studies and case studies on tourism development in Asia or relevance to Asian context.
  • Studies related to marketing and promotion of tourism.
  • Studies related to tourism forecasting and economic aspects of tourism.
  • Studies on social, cultural, economic and environmental impact of tourism.
  • Tourism and environmental sustainability.
  • Human resources development and educational issues in tourism.
  • Financial models econometrics of tourism.
  • Operations of tourism and hospitality businesses at both macro and micro levels.
  • Gaming and casino industry in Asia.
  • IT and Internet aspects of tourism.
  • Other papers related to the theme of Conference.

BEST PAPERS

Best papers will be competitively selected and authors will be acknowledged with a plaque and certificate.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • Three-page abstracts (typed double-spaced) of proposed papers should be submitted for the final selection process. Indicate the author�s name and affiliation only on the cover page.  Author's name should not be indicated anywhere in the abstract.  Indicate clearly "Paper for Fifth Biennial Conference".
  • Submit abstracts to Conference Organizer (Prof Kaye Chon) by either electronic mail ([email protected]) or by regular airmail.
  • Deadline for submitting abstracts is January 31, 2002. Paper Review Committee will conduct a refereed screening of abstracts. Authors of accepted abstracts will be asked to submit completed papers before April 3, 2002. 
  • Once the paper is accepted, at least one of the authors must register for and present the paper at the Forum.
PUBLICATION PLAN

Final copies of accepted papers will be professionally published as an edited conference proceedings PRIOR TO the Conference.
