Fund to Provide Continuation of Medical Benefits for Hotel Workers Displaced by the Closing of Marriott World Trade Center and the Millenium Hilton |
NEW YORK, Oct. 5, 2001 - In the days following the September 11 terrorist
attacks here, the Hotel Association of New York City worked closely with
the New York Hotel Trades Council and affiliated trade groups to devise
and enact unprecedented relief measures to support lodging industry workers
adversely affected by the tragedy. Chief among these is a $5 million
special relief fund to provide continuation of medical benefits to workers
displaced by the closings of two member hotels: Marriott World Trade Center
and the Millenium Hilton.
"The $5 million will be held in a special relief fund created under the auspices of the Hotel Industry Health Benefits Fund and will not require any additional contributions or payments by any contributing employer," said HANYC President Joseph E. Spinnato in announcing the action. "This special fund will be established from the contributions regularly received from contributing employers. It will be administered pursuant to conditions and guidelines to be established by the Trustees of the Health Benefits Fund." The fund is the cornerstone of a comprehensive effort to aid the city's hotel industry which has been hard hit by the reduction in travel and tourism to the city since the attacks. Other measures instituted in recent days include the following:
187 of the City's finest hotels, representing more than 60,000 rooms and 30,000 employees. The industry is an integral part of tourism, the city's second largest revenue producer. |
