White Plains, NY, November 20, 2001 - While fewer buyers attended the 2001 International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show® (IH/M&RS) than in past years, exhibitors agreed the attendees were business-focused and ready to buy at the 86th annual event the first industry gathering since September 11th. More than 36,873 total trade attendees visited the four-day event, representing all sectors of the lodging and culinary industries from around the world.

This year, the Show featured a number of relief and recovery-directed activities in addition to its typical business-to-business offerings. Among highlights were a Unity Day Opening Ceremony in which industry leaders paid tribute to New York City emergency personnel and armed forces representatives and Say Thanks to a Hero luncheons which raised funds for the Twin Towers Fund, Uniformed Firefighters Association Widows & Childrens Fund and Windows of Hope.

The IH/M&RS also offered participants over 30 educational programs addressing security, travel and tourism and todays economy. The Restaurant Futurists Conference returned for the second year, presenting 15 sessions focusing on recovery issues for the restaurant industry, including a continuing education day. This years market also included many Show-sponsored special events. Highlights were the 21st annual Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality Design; the 86th Annual International Hospitality Ball; Farmers and Chefs, a Taste-Around Benefit. Proceeds from these events will benefit disaster relief charities.

We are proud and pleased with the turn-out at this years IH/M&RS. We decided to lead by example, to show that tradeshows and market gatherings are critical to our business, and the end results are very positive.  Gene Rupnik, Chairman, IH/M&RS Board of Directors

The results of this years IH/M&RS are very encouraging for the industry. Although attendance was down, exhibitors were pleased with the quality of buyers who attended and were ready to do business. A significant example of the business-focused attitude exhibited at the IH/M&RS this year was that of U.S. Air Force Purchasing, spending over $12 million on the Showfloor.  Christian Falkenberg, show manager

Exhibitor Feedback

This was our first time here and weve had a good response to our product. Were very happy with the quality of buyers. They have been very receptive and weve made a number of different contacts independent chains, privately owned, franchises, meeting and banquet planners, assisted living, and the armed services. Dan Ottow, Kane Graphical Corp.

There has been a great sense of unity and enthusiasm at this Show. This was our first time here, and it has been great. Weve made a good mix of contacts and will be back next year absolutely!  Mark Schexnayder, Louisiana Seafood

This year, our market had a fabulous Show! Our new spa line was very popular, and we saw four and five star boutique hoteliers, consultants and planners, and more interior designers this year than any other year. Patrick Gallagher, Pacific Direct

Our expectations coming in were lower because of recent events, but weve had a good Show and weve had good leads and the quality of the buyers was good for our business. Hans Dietsch, Dometic
