Dedicated as Dedman School of Hospitality Following $7 million Gift from the Robert and Nancy Dedman Foundation |
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- September 2001 - Because
of a $7 million gift from the Robert and Nancy Dedman Foundation, the FSU
department of hospitality administration, which is one of the nation's
oldest hospitality management programs, has graduated into being a school.
The 54 year old department officially became the Dedman School of Hospitality
at the final Florida Board of Regents meeting this past June.
"Given the size and diversity of the hospitality industry, the Dedman School of Hospitality recognizes that students may want to focus their study in a particular specialty area," Bosselman said. "In addition to the traditional career paths offered in hospitality management, students can concentrate in management information systems, professional golf management, senior services management or resort and condominium management." According to Bosselman, the goal of the school's concentration in professional
golf management is to achieve and maintain a level of excellence that will
distinguish both the hospitality and professional golf development programs
as among the best in the nation. In addition to classrooms and a
computer laboratory, the school, housed in University Center, gives students
the use of its Hospitality Education Resource Center and a teaching kitchen.
To earn their degrees, students are required to complete 1,000 hours of approved hospitality industry work. While students are expected to obtain their own part-time and full-time industry positions, the school provides guidance and assistance through its extensive industry network. Students also have the option of completing the required work experience through the school's formal internship program. The school's curriculum combines courses from the College of Business with hospitality management principles. It emphasizes analytical tools, processes, systems and problem solving approaches to the industry. The school operates on the principle that the key to success in hospitality management is centered on the "human" element, a high quality service and financial success. The school is accredited by the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the most recognized and prestigious accreditation organization for business schools in the world. |
