Marriott's Renaissance Brand
Refining its Positioning

;

WASHINGINGTON DC - August 29, 2001 - Renaissance Hotels, Resorts and SuitesSuites, an upscale full-service lodging brand of Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR), is further refining its brand positioning to provide properties with uniquely expressive design, a new level of "Savvy Service" and restaurants serving contemporary local cuisine that appeal to both hotel and local customers.

"Renaissance's goal is to provide all the services and amenities of a full-service property with the personalization and ambience of a more intimate hotel.  Renaissance offers the body of a hotel brand with the soul of an independent," said Sid Yu, global brand vice president of Renaissance Hotels, Resorts and Suites.  "We want to instill a sense of delight and discovery for Renaissance guests by having each hotel deliver distinctive experiences."

"This is an exciting time for the Renaissance brand," added Jurgen Giesbert, senior vice president, Renaissance North America.  "As visitors to our new hotels and restaurants in Hollywood, New Orleans, Sonoma, Pittsburgh, Miami Beach and Boca Raton will see, Renaissance embodies an authentic flair while not straying from the brand's commitment to provide the quality and guest service that the brand is well known for."

Expressive Design

Whether located in restored landmark buildings, such as the Renaissance London Chancery Court and the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel, or newly built properties, such as the Renaissance Ft. Lauderdale Hotel and the Renaissance Charleston Hotel in Charleston, S.C., the brand is working closely with its owners and franchisees to ensure that each Renaissance hotel offers a warm and timeless design.

Renaissance style is rooted in classical design, with a touch of sophistication and distinctiveness.  Assisting with the development of each Renaissance hotel's design and decor is the award-winning interior designer, Cheryl Rowley, principal of Cheryl Rowley Designs, Inc. of Beverly Hills, Calif.

"Savvy Service"

Dedicated to ensuring a warmly inclusive and attentive service culture, Renaissance associates will offer guests "Savvy Service" by providing an inviting sense of arrival; random acts of kindness; VIP personalization and very attentive, proactive service.  Renaissance will continue to build its reputation for delivering personalized and differentiated service through "Savvy Service Basics," a set of 20 service tenets that each Renaissance associate will embrace, demonstrate and recommit to each day during team briefing sessions.

Street Restaurants

With access from the street as well as the hotel, "street restaurants" at Renaissance hotels will feature cutting edge chefs preparing inventive local cuisine.  "Street restaurants" and the bars located within the hotel are designed to attract local clientele as well as overnight guests.  This direction builds on a Renaissance brand strength -- outstanding cuisine and highly regarded restaurants.  For example, Sans Souci, serving French Mediterranean fare in the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel, was named the most popular restaurant in the city this year by Zagat Surveys.

In addition, preeminent chefs from several top restaurants are featured at Renaissance.  Executive Chef Rene Bajeux, one of 50 master chefs in the United States, will display his culinary talents at the Renaissance Pere Marquette Hotel in New Orleans, La., when it opens in October 2001.  Previously, Chef Bajeux was the executive chef at The Grill Room at the Windsor Court Hotel, one of the city's five-star restaurants.

At the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel, celebrity restaurateur Wolfgang Puck will cater events held in the 25,000-square-foot grand ballroom and at the hotel's 12,000-square-foot pool deck featuring views of the surrounding Hollywood Hills. These restaurants will enhance the brand while driving revenues and profits.

Renaissance Growth

As of the second quarter 2001, the Renaissance brand includes 114 properties in 27 countries  with 42,200 guest rooms.  Renaissance has added 46 hotels since Marriott acquired the brand in February 1997.  By year-end 2002, Renaissance expects to open an additional 15 hotels throughout the U.S. (11) and internationally (4).  New locations include Hollywood, Calif.; New Orleans, La.; St. Louis, Mo.; Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt; and Tianjin, China. This year, Renaissance opened hotels in locations such as Costa Do Sauipe, Brazil; Mumbai, India; Kota Bahru, Malaysia; Honolulu, Hawaii; Los Angeles, Calif.; Sonoma, Calif.; Miami Beach, Fla.; and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL, INC. (NYSE: MAR) is a leading worldwide hospitality company with nearly 2,400 operating units in the United States and 59 other countries and territories.
