AH&LA Creates Energy Conservation Tips
in Wake of New Surcharges
--
Washington, May 22, 2001 - With energy shortages affecting businesses across the nation, the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) is posting energy conservation suggestions on its Web site, www.ahlaonline.org, to assist the hotel community.  AH&LA teamed with the Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR® program and the association's environmental partner, Project Planet, in response to the newly-imposed energy surcharges at some lodging properties.

The tips focus on three main areas, including (1) customer service guidelines, which help guests concerned with energy surcharges; (2) property energy performance, which helps hoteliers compile a strategic energy management plan; and (3) consumer support, which offers guests simple, voluntary conservation suggestions.

"In light of the recent energy shortage and its expected affects on summer travel, we want to help hoteliers do their part in the nation's conservation efforts," said 2001 AH&LA Chairman John Russell.  "We also want to show guests that we are not imposing fees without thought and consideration."
In addition to these simple tips, AH&LA's Engineering and Environment Committee is developing detailed, educational resources for energy management and conservation practices for properties.

For free copies of AH&LA's energy conservation tips, call the association's fax-on-demand service at (800) 701-7725, document 260, or visit www.ahlaonline.org.
