Superior Small Lodging Growing As a Brand Name
for Small Motels, Inns and Bed and Breakfasts
ORLANDO, FL – January 2001 – The Superior Small Lodging (SSL) Association today announced that its membership grew by more than 28 percent, surpassing projections for year-over-year growth among its small hotels and inns.  SSL attributes this growth to increased property member confidence in the SSL brand name and as a direct result of word of mouth by satisfied customers to SSL properties, thereby motivating other hotels and inns to join the Association.  In addition, SSL topped off its marketing performance as a result of its alliances with destination Convention and Visitors Bureaus, Chambers of Commerce, and Tourism Destination Organizations in Florida; Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin; The Poconos, Pennsylvania; and Ashtabula, Ohio.

“The relationship of SSL members with their customers has been the key to our growth success in 2000,” said Donna Boucher, Chair of SSL.  “Our visitors tell us that the difference between a good trip and a great trip is almost always tied to the quality and price of accommodations, so our members have reduced the guesswork when it comes to finding a place to stay; they’ve improved their operations, improved their relationships with their customers, and ultimately have been more effective in competing with other hotels and inns.

We are in a great competitive position within the hospitality industry and are better able to address our expanded market opportunities.”  Boucher added, “With customer-focused members, we are now better optimized for volume in visitor traffic.  Who would not want to be a part of SSL?  Properties in the small lodging sector continue to witness our improvements and our positioning; and they want to be a part of our team, hence our tremendous growth.  Recognition of SSL

The Superior Small Lodging program originated in Fort Lauderdale over 10 years ago.

The purpose was to insure that tourists received not only great value at member properties but also high quality accommodations. Another key was that guests were looking for exactly what each property offered - its own sense of style and ambience. That individualized local flavor that guests found so important was coupled with a strict quality assurance program.

membership numbers of over 520 properties attests to SSL’s appeal to travelers.  As we see it, we’re looking forward to growing even further in 2001 and beyond.”

The concept of SSL first originated in 1988 in Broward County to advance understanding and awareness of small lodgings as distinct and unique within the hospitality industry.  SSL promotes the concept that quality matters and counts when small lodgings compete for market share in the hospitality industry.  Today, Superior Small Lodging is the brand name for small, superior hotels, motels, inns, bed and breakfasts, camping lodgings, and cabins that all meet standards of cleanliness, comfort, privacy and safety.  SSL is dedicated to promoting understanding and awareness of the small lodging sector in meeting visitors’ accommodation needs and travel plans.  A signature element of SSL is the stringent property inspection done annually that prospective and active members must pass to qualify for and maintain their membership. In addition to Property Membership, there is also an Allied Membership classification for vendors.
