Orient-Express Hotels Acquires Hotels in South Pacific
and South America For $37 Million
HAMILTON, Bermuda, Jan. 17, 2001 - Orient-Express Hotels Ltd.  (NYSE: OEH) , the international hotel, tourist train, restaurant and river cruise company, announced today that it has acquired the 81 room Miraflores Park Plaza Hotel in Lima, Peru and the 80 room Bora Bora Lagoon Resort in the Society Islands in the South Pacific, in separate transactions totalling $37 million.

At an average cost per room of $230,000 the company feels both properties have excellent earnings potential.

The Lima property is almost new and is the finest hotel in the city.  The Bora Bora property opened in 1993 and has been managed by Orient-Express Hotels since April 1997.  It will require about $2.5m in improvements.

Orient-Express Hotels in partnership with Peruval, a Peruvian company, owns deluxe hotels in Cuzco and Machu Picchu, Peru and has a 60 year concession to operate PeruRail, the countrys primary rail network.  The company plans that the Lima property will be added to this partnership.  Nearly all tourists to Peru overnight in Lima en route to or from Cuzco and other tourist destinations because the international flights operate only through Lima.  Those same tourists nearly all travel on PeruRail between Cuzco and Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca sanctuary.  The company feels it can encourage many of those tourists to stay at its Lima hotel in preference to other properties and in addition attract a number of upscale business visitors to Lima.

The Miraflores Park Plaza is located in Limas most fashionable district and overlooks the sea.

Bora Bora competes successfully with the Hawaiian Islands for tourists from the western United States, western Canada and Japan who are seeking beautiful white coral sand beaches and spectacular marine life in a romantic Polynesian environment.  The beaches along the west coast of North America suffer from cold water and heavy surf and the residents of these areas look west or to the Caribbean for their beach holidays.  There are daily flights from Los Angeles to Tahiti, and frequent air services from Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Chile.

Simon M.C. Sherwood, President of Orient-Express Hotels, said that both properties had excellent potential to increase both rate and occupancy.  Also, there is scope to increase the number of rooms without loss of quality through restructuring in the case of Lima and addition of units on the 12 acre site in Bora Bora.

The Lima property has 64 double rooms, 14 suites and three Presidential suites, a large ballroom, squash court, gym and health and beauty facilities.  A $3 million improvement program is planned for this property.

The Bora Bora property has an advantage over all the other hotels on the island in that it is located on its own island and looks onto the famous Bora Bora volcano which inspired plays and films such as South Pacific and James Micheners book Tales of the South Pacific.  Most of the other hotels, being next to the volcano and facing out to sea, do not have such a view.  A shuttle boat service taking 5 minutes connects the Bora Bora Lagoon Resort with the main village on the island while the guests at other hotels must travel by car.
