By Larry Bingham, The Oregonian, Portland, Ore.McClatchy-Tribune Regional News May 01--What's happening this Wednesday in Northeast Portland? --Metro officials are meeting with city and county leaders this week to talk about funding for the proposed new Hyatt Hotel across from the Oregon Convention Center. --The Oregon Food Bank is now accepting incentives for donations of old refrigerators and freezers. --The Portland Playhouse and the Hand2Mouth Theatre have teamed up to take on "The Left Hand of Darkness," according to my colleague Marty Hughley. --Grant High School senior Tywya Malchow-Hay has won a $1,000 Greenfield Peace Writing contest scholarship. She plans to attended Chapman University and major in dance. --The Sabin Community Association Spring meeting will be held Monday, May 13, starting with a social time at 6:30 p.m. in the Sabin School auditorium. On the agenda: an update on the Sabin Triangle pocket park project. --The Meals on Wheels Spring Luncheon is scheduled for May 9 at the Oregon Convention Center, 777 N.E. MLK, Jr. Blvd. --The Alameda Elementary School Family Dance is this Friday, May 3. And this year's theme is "Rock Around the Clock," a sock hop, from 6 to 8 p.m. Soda jerks will dish up root beer floats and hot dogs. Proceeds benefit the 5th grade graduation. --The Alameda Brew Pub announced on Facebook that come June 1, the Pedal and Poker event returns. --OPB has an interesting piece on PHAME students using ipads to compose music. --In outer NE, the Parkrose Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative has set an open house on May 16, according to the Mid-County Memo. --Finally: The Vernon Neighborhood Association's Clean Up will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church, NE 20th Avenue and Killingsworth Street.
