Dickson City theater on track for fall debut; new hotel opens doors (The Times-Tribune, Scranton, Pa.)

July 29--A 14-screen movie theater in Dickson City is on schedule to open in time for the holiday season.

Moviegoers should be able to see films at the theater, which includes an Imax screen, in early October, said David Poland, vice president of operations for Alliance Entertainment. The roof and parking lot are in place, and workers now are finishing wiring the building, Mr. Poland said.

"They're right where they should be as far as the construction schedule," he said.

The theater will start to hire staff around the second week of September. Its fall opening will allow it to show big-budget films debuting around Thanksgiving and Christmas, Mr. Poland noted, such as the next "Harry Potter" installment and "Tron: Legacy."

All screens will be digital, meaning films are shown from hard drives rather than 35 millimeter film. The theater also will include five 3-D screens, with the IMAX capable of showing 3-D movies.

But the theater was not the only construction project taking place this summer in Dickson City. Microtel Inns & Suites on Main Street by Interstate 81 opened July 22 and filled more than 20 of its 62 rooms its first day, said Marcy Singleton, front-desk supervisor.

The nonsmoking hotel has about 12 staff members and includes amenities like free wireless Internet, a fitness facility and a business center with meeting space.

People inquired about booking rooms before the hotel officially opened, Ms. Singleton said, and a group staying this weekend will nearly fill the hotel.

"We've been steady," she said.
