| By David Smiley, The Miami HeraldMcClatchy-Tribune Regional News July 28--The Betsy Hotel's hopes to open its rooftop to the public have once again been dashed. The Planning Board voted 5-1 Tuesday to deny the South Beach hotel's request for a public rooftop lounge. The Betsy's ownership can refile an application immediately, but attorney Alexander Tachmes said he wasn't sure when or if that would happen. The rooftop bar was opposed by neighbors of the surrounding buildings on Ocean Drive who said allowing the requested 200-person capacity on the roof would create crowd noise loud enough to penetrate their homes. The denial comes as Commissioner Jonah Wolfson is vetting a proposal to further regulate rooftop bars. Wolfson spoke during the meeting and asked board members to deny the hotel's proposal. ----- To see more of The Miami Herald or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.herald.com.
