Mount Pleasant, S.C., condo-hotel project wins initial OK (The Post and Courier, Charleston, S.C.)

May 9--MOUNT PLEASANT -- A 132-room hotel and 25-condominium development at the gateway to the town on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard received preliminary approval Monday.

The Town Council Planning and Development Committee gave the thumbs up to the three-acre project at the site of the old Grace Chapel where the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge meets the northbound boulevard. The abandoned building has become an eyesore, officials said, and the new development is a chance to create a more favorable first impression of the town.

Town Council will vote on the project May 13.

Town officials have said that at least four development groups are interested in more than 100 acres near the base of the bridge. Council recently raised the allowable height of buildings near the bridge to 80 feet. The town plans other incentives for a hospitality district near the bridge that will be part of its boulevard redevelopment effort.

The Grace Chapel property, also the former location of Quincy's steakhouse, sold for $1.97 million to Robert L. Clement III and L. Robert Demoura in the summer of 2006, according to Charleston County records. The developers have not yet revealed which hotel company will be
