By Kevin Cole, Omaha World-Herald, Neb.McClatchy-Tribune Regional News

May 7--A man was shot and wounded this morning at a downtown hotel during a struggle with two Douglas County sheriff's deputies.

At 10 a.m., two investigators came to the Courtyard by Marriott at 10th and Dodge Streets as part of a theft investigation, said Chief Deputy Marty Bilek. They confronted a suspect in a hotel room and began struggling with him, Bilek said.

One of the deputies shot the man in the abdomen and the leg, Bilek said.

During the struggle, the deputy suffered a gash on the back of his head.

The man was taken in critical condition to Creighton University Medical Center, Bilek said. The deputy was treated at the hospital and released.

In addition, a pregnant woman who was in the room was taken to the hospital as a precaution after she experienced discomfort. She was not wounded in the struggle, Bilek said.

Marriott officials declined to comment.
